Low Gear ratio for crankbaits?

Buddy and I were talking crankbaits, and rods and reels for throwing them. He uses a slow 5.x or even a 4.x ratio baitcaster to throw his crankbaits. Less torque/fatigue, and it forces him to fish them slower.

I have never heard of this, but have since (via google) seen it mentioned a few times.

Who hear fishes a slow ratio for their crankbaits?

I stay with the middle-of-the-road 6.1 or 6.3 to 1 gear ratios. They work for me, I can fish them slow enough or fast enough. It's like Al Linder says - you want to fish slower, then reel slower.

For deep big lipped bass baits, I use a Curado 200B38 which is a 3.8:1 gear ratio. I like it because it is easy to pull a big bait through the water and my arms don't get wore out at all. Using narrower walleye type cranks and stick baits, I am usually using a 6.1:1. The low gear ratio is nice for deep stuff though.

I gotta go with what perchjerker and al lindner have said, you can use the faster gear ratios, just reel them slower if you have to. I use a 6.3:1 and it works great.

Hiya -

Count me in the low gear camp. I still use some of the old Lews Speed Spools (4.3:1) for a lot of cranking, plus Curado 3,8s like Polar, and this year a Revo Winch. I like it in part for the fatigue/torque factor (makes a big difference on how your wrist feels at the end of a long day) and partly because of the speed range I have available. I can really crawl a crank if I want to.

That all having been said, it's 100% personal preference. I know a lot of guys that crank with a 6.3:1

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

I use a 5.8:1, but have used a 6.3:1 and it worked well. Most people who use the lower ratio's are throwing deep diving cranks for hours at a time, so the lower ratio causes much less fatigue.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
