Spin Casting Reels

2 posts in this topic

What are the best quality "Spin Casting" Reels? I am interested in three categfories:
1) light
2) for 8-12 lb test
3) for 14-20 lb test

I hear a lot about bait casting and spinning reels, but never anything about spin casting reels.

Dan,

While most spinning and bait casting reels on the market have gotten better spin cast reels still seem to get worse. Changing them to all plastic pieces and such. However there is one great spin cast reel out there in my humble opinion. Daiwa makes a line called the Silver Cast and the Gold Cast. Both are excellent reels and come in a variety of sizes. The Silver Cast retails for $19.99 at most places. It comes in a size 40 which is a great size for kids and people with smaller hands. The operation of the reel is smooth and it takes in line nicely. Hope this helps.

Good Luck
Chev

    • I usually get mine from Tim over at Stump Jumper Designs. He does great work and has lots of choices of woods etc...
    •   Yeah, but you know your Aunt Bev will never make fun and insult you on FaceBook like you will get here!
    • Smoked 3 slimers last week.  real simple brine, 1 cup pickling salt, 1 cup brown sugar and water to cover.  24 hr soak.  added onions and brown sugar on top. 3.5 hrs at 195.  Used to leave skin on, dealt with the slime.  still tasted great.  Been skin off for a couple batches lately and its the way to go.  no slime to deal with, just sprayed the rack with pam.  hammerhandles be ware!
    • I've only tried them with Northern, but honestly, I'm not sure I could taste the difference if I didn't make them myself.  All psychological, IMO - this will likely start an off-topic discussion BUT I participated in an 8 person taste test between Walleye, Northern and Bass (yes, we cut-up a medium sized bucket-mouth).  I was the only one to name all three fish correctly and it was only due to the fact that my friend who was in-charge of the test accidentally missed a y-bone so I just had to guess in-between walleye and bass and I guessed correctly.  A couple of the guys also had a y-bone and got their guess between 'eye and bass wrong!!!  Flaky white fish is flaky white fish - especially when you bust it all up, mix it with bread crumbs, mayo and whatever else.  Again, just my opinion.
    •   I agree the split did not work out. Also a lot of people are on FB. Heck I finally joined last year. Jury is still out whether I like it or not!!
    •   Just like you being a social media queen, LOL

    • Every one said, with out Double here we may as well leave.   So, Welcome back may be with you here they will come back now!
    • My buddy Dan and I have been going to the same farm for 3 years now and the turkey hunting is almost unfair. We've never been skunked and the only time we haven't tagged out is the first year.    This year the bowhunting was tough. We were trying to be fancy and get things on film and it hurt us tremendously. So, naturally, we gave up on filming and went back to having fun.    We shot 4 turkeys, a tom and a jake each, all by fanning (reaping). The action was intense and super fun. Additionally, after having a set busted by a wandering daytime coyote, I lip squeaked her into to 20 yards and finished her off with the same treatment, a load of #6 to the face. My jake and the coyote are on cell phone video so I will see about sharing those.   My tom, came on the last day. He ran more than 200 yds just to confront that turkey fan. Due to a depression in the landscape, I had no idea where he would come up. He emerged at 10 FEET! and in a split second I shot him at 8FEET!! Thankfully I had the bead on his head or I would've likely missed. Nothing beats turkey hunting with your best buddy.    And I'm having a taxidermist friend of mine do a euro mount on the coyote skull. Unfortunately the hide was shedding terribly and was matted with mud.
