Fishing season question-newbie

I'm heading up north this weekend and trying to figure out if it is legal to fish the lakes right now. I know that fishing season kicks off on mothers day but if I simply want to target cats and rough fish from shore, would that be okay? I normally fish the rivers.

I saw the season opener dates on the dnr site but am not targeting any specific fish. Just don't want any issues.

You're good to go as long as your not targeting out of season fish. Rough fish are open year round.

Fishing is legal year-round in mn, some species are target-able year round while others aren't. Cats and I believe all rough fish are legal to fish for year round.

Depending on what part of "up north" you are in you may need a trout stamp if you're on trout-designated streams.

The only fish not leagal to catch this time of year are walleyes, northerns ,muskies and small and large mouth bass.
