Tinkhamtown
Water stopped coming out, How hard is it to replace the water pump impeller on a 1969 6 hp Evinrude outboard? Should I be able to do it myself or should I bring it in?
boatfixer
Simple job. Remove the vertical side plate just above the anti-cavitation plate, disconnect the shift shaft. Remove the screws holding lower unit on....Now, heres the only tricky part... Near the end of the drive shaft there is a pin through the driveshaft that holds the seal into the end of the crankcase. You may need to rotate the flywheel to align that pin with the cutouts in the exhaust housing..How will you know when they are aligned? the lower unit will drop off with very little effort. **DO NOT FORCEFULLY REMOVE** If it wont come off, its probably not aligned, no big deal, just rotate until it drops easily. (be sure the spark plugs are removed when rotating the flywheel-it's easier to turn and wont start)..Remove the pin, remove the pump housing, lift off, remove impeller. Just reverse the order and thats about it.
