Mississippi River Pools 16 to 20: In Pool 16, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 15 is 12.48 feet and falling. Fishing has been slow due to high water. In Pool 17, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 16 is 13.18 feet. Water levels are forecasted to crest today and begin falling over the weekend. Fishing has been slow due to high water.

In Pool 18, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 17 is 16.04 feet and forecasted to crest today. River level is about a foot above flood stage. The Toolesboro landing is underwater. Pool 19, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 18 is 12.08 feet. River levels are 2 feet above flood stage. Fishing has been slow due to high water. Pool 20, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 19 is 16.64 feet. Flood stage is at 16 feet. Fishing has been slow due to high water.

Lake Darling (Washington county): The lake is completely drained.

Lake Belva Deer (Keokuk county): The lake is mostly ice free except on cold mornings when a thin layer of ice forms.

Lake Geode (Henry county): Lake was ice free as of last Friday. They hope to have the docks in as soon as the weather allows.

Coralville Reservoir (Johnson county): The reservoir is ice free and the water level is expected to crest Saturday at 695.5 feet. Normal pool is 683 feet. No fishing report at this time.

Lake Macbride: The lake is ice free and is now back to normal water level. No fishing report at this time.

Kent Park Lake: The lake is ice free. No fishing report at this time.

Mississippi River Pools 16 to 20: River levels throughout pools 16 to 20 have fallen below flood stage. Main channel water temperatures range from 43 to 45 degrees and water clarity has improved. Most area fishing reports are coming from lakes and ponds.

In Pool 16, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 15 is 8.24 feet. River levels are forecasted to remain steady over the weekend. Walleye and sauger fishing in the tailwaters has been slow. A few anglers have been catching channel catfish on shad. Some bluegills and crappies are being caught on minnows and wax worms in Sunset Marina.

In Pool 17, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 16 is 7.14 feet. Fishing has been slow due to high water this past week.

In Pool 18, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 17 is 9.71 feet and falling. Tailwater fishing has been slow for walleyes and saugers due to high water.

In Pool 19, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 18 is 6.36 feet and falling. Fishing on the river has been slow due to high water. In Pool 20, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 19 is 9.03 feet and falling. Fishing has been slow due to high water.

Lake Darling (Washington): Last week’s rains filled the lake back up but the drain pipe remains open and as of the March 19 the lake is down about four feet and will continue to drop until the lake is dry again. There are no fish in the lake.

Lake Belva Deer (Keokuk): The bass are moving into the shallow bays later in the day when the sun has had a chance to warm the water up.

Lake Geode (Henry): The dock at the main ramp is in and plenty of anglers have been enjoying the nice weather but not much as been biting.

Lake Rathbun (Appanoose): The lake level is 2 feet above normal pool. Water temperature is ranging from the upper 30s to the low 40s depending on location. Use cut bait or shad guts to catch channel catfish on windblown shorelines.

Lake Sugema (Van Buren): Walleyes have started biting on jigs tipped with minnows along the rocky shorelines. A few bluegills have been biting on small jigs fished in the shallows.

Lake Wapello (Davis): The lake has been completely drained. Now would be a good time to take the opportunity to look at the new fish habitat that has been added to the lake.

Lake Miami (Monroe): Channel catfish have been biting on dead minnows or shad guts. Largemouth bass have been hitting on spinner baits fished slowly and also soft plastics.

Lake Macbride (Johnson): The lake is full and most docks are in at the boat ramps. The main lake water temperature is in the low 40s and a few channel catfish are being caught on cut bait.

Coralville Reservoir (Johnson): The lake level as of March 18 is 694 feet and falling; normal pool is 679 feet. It is projected to be 690 feet by the weekend. The water is very dirty and no fishing reports are available.

Kent Park (Johnson): No fishing report at this time.

Rodgers Lake (Benton): The lake has sustained a winter fish kill due to low oxygen levels. The severity has not been determined yet.

Union Grove Lake (Tama): No fishing report at this time.

Otter Creek Lake (Tama): No fishing report at this time.

Skunk River (Washington, Keokuk and Henry): Anglers are doing very well catching catfish. I would try using either cut bait or night crawlers as the catfish are feeding on fish that died during the winter or on worms that got washed in during the flooding. The river is down but it is still flowing fast so use caution when boating.

Mississippi River Pools 16 through 20: River levels are once again on the rise. Main channel water temperatures are 46 to 48 degrees.

Pool 16: Tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 15 is 9.8 feet and is forecasted to reach 11.6 feet by the middle of next week. Some saugers are being caught in Sylvan Slough on jigs and minnows. Anglers have been catching channel catfish on shad guts around wing dams with deeper holes. Crappies and bluegills are being caught in Sunset Marina.

Pool 17: Tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 16 is 8.97 feet and forecasted to rise to 11.2 feet by the middle of next week. Tailwater fishing for walleyes and saugers has been slow. Most fishing reports are coming from area lakes and farm ponds.

Pool 18: Tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 17 is 10.83 feet and forecasted to reach 12.7 feet by the end of the weekend. With current river stage forecasts, the Toolesboro landing area could be partially covered in water by this weekend. Tailwater fishing for walleyes and sauger has been slow. A few anglers have been catching channel catfish on shad and night crawlers.

Pool 19: Tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 18 is 7.30 feet and expected to reach 8.8 feet by Monday. Some anglers have been catching channel catfish on night crawlers and cut bait.

Pool 20: Tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 19 is 10.28 feet and is forecasted to reach 13.3 feet by the middle of next week. No fishing report.

Lake Darling (Washington): The water level continues to drop as the rain water leaves through the drain pipe. This will continue until the lake is dry again. There are no fish in the lake.

Lake Belva Deer (Keokuk): Bass fishing has slowed down this last week with the weather change. Very few anglers have been out this week.

Lake Geode (Henry): Anglers should be looking to catch a few catfish along the face of the dam or in the upper end where the creek enters the lake.

Lake Macbride (Johnson): The lake is full and most docks are in at the boat ramps. The main lake water temperature is in middle 40s and a few channel catfish are being caught on cut bait. Walleyes should be spawning very soon, so look for them on shallow rock.

Coralville Reservoir (Johnson): The lake level is 681 feet and is falling. Normal pool is 679 feet and it is projected to be 679 feet by the weekend. No fishing report is available.

In Pool 16, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 15 is 11.26 feet. River stage is forecasted to stay fairly steady over the next few days. Some saugers are being caught on jigs and minnows in Sylvan Slough. A few crappies and bluegills are being caught in Sunset Marina on minnows and wax worms.

In Pool 17, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 16 is 10.55 feet. The gates are out of the water at the dam and river levels are forecasted to stay steady over the next few days. Walleye and sauger fishing in the tailwaters has been slow. Crappie and bluegill fishing in the backwaters has been slow.

In Pool 18, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 17 is 12.29 feet. Walleye and sauger fishing has been slow in the tailwaters. Some channel catfish are being caught on shad guts. Crappie and bluegill fishing in the backwaters is slow. Some crappies and channel catfish are being caught in Lake Odessa.

In Pool 19, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 18 is 8.45 feet. Fishing has been slow.

Lake Darling (Washington): The water level continues to drop as the rain water leaves the drain pipe. There looks to be about 4 feet of water left to go. This will continue until the lake is dry again. There are no fish in the lake.

Mississippi River Pools 16 to 20: River levels are still high but forecasted to begin slowly falling by the weekend or early next week. Main channel water temperature throughout the pools is between 44 and 46 degrees.

In Pool 16, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 15 is 12.06 feet. River levels are forecasted to start falling by this weekend. Sylvan Slough has been producing some saugers and a few walleyes on jigs and minnows. Bluegill and crappie fishing in Sunset Marina has been fair on minnows and wax worms.

In Pool 17, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 16 is 11.27 feet. River levels are forecasted to begin falling by this weekend. Fishing has been slow in the tailwaters for walleyes and saugers. There have been reports of some white bass being caught around GPC.

In Pool 18, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 17 is 12.59 feet. River levels are forecasted to begin falling by early next week. Walleye and sauger fishing in the tailwaters has been slow. Some channel catfish are being caught on shad and night crawlers. A few crappies are starting to be caught in the backwaters on jigs and minnows.

In Pool 19, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 18 is 8.62 feet. River levels are forecasted to begin falling by early next week. Fishing has been slow in the tailwaters for walleye and saugers. Some channel catfish are being caught on shad and night crawlers.

In Pool 20, tailwater stage at Lock and Dam 19 is 10.65 feet. No fishing report.

Lake Odessa (Louisa): The water levels are good, but the weather has not been so good. Hopefully the weather will warm up soon and anglers can get back out. The lateral ditch is currently being dredged.

Lake Darling (Washington): The water level continues to drop as the water from the rains leaves the drain pipe. About 2 feet of water is left to go. This will continue until the lake is dry again. There are no fish in the lake.

Lake Belva Deer (Keokuk): The cold, windy weather has kept most of the anglers away. Construction is continuing on the road into the campground or south end of the park. The lake can be accessed from the north boat ramp or from the park road from the dam past the cabins.

Lake Geode (Henry): Very few anglers have been out this week. Hopefully with the forecasted warmer weather the anglers will return.

Lake Rathbun (Appanoose): The lake level is 1 ½ feet above normal pool. Water temperature is in the middle 40s. Use cut bait or shad guts to catch channel catfish on windblown shorelines. The following boat ramps are currently closed for repaving: high water ramp at Buck Creek, the South Fork Marina ramp, and the Bridgeview ramp.

Lock and Dam 16 tailwater is 9.60 feet and falling. Water temperature is 49 degrees. Walleye are biting on jig and minnow or soft plastic in shallow water. Sauger are biting on jig and minnow or soft plastic in shallow water

Lock and Dam 17 tailwater elevation is 11.18 feet and falling Water temperature is 49 degrees. Channel catfish are biting on night crawlers.

Lock and Dam 18 tailwater elevation is 7.59 feet and falling. Water temperature is 49 degrees. Channel catfish are biting on night crawlers.

Construction is continuing on the road into the campground or South end of the park. The Lake can be accessed from the north boat ramp or from the park road from the dam past the cabins.

Lake Geode (Henry): More anglers are starting to come out again as the weather starts to warm up. Look for the fish to move into the shallows on the warm afternoons.

Lake Rathbun (Appanoose): The lake level is 1 1/2 feet above normal pool. Water temperature is ranging in the middle to upper 40s. Use cut bait or shad guts to catch channel catfish on windblown shorelines. Lake Darling: The lake is drained.

Skunk River (Rose Hill to Coppock): The river is forecasted to be above flood stage at Sigourney on Thursday and the fall back below its banks fairly quickly. Expect this surge to continue down the river.

Poll Miller Park Lake: The water temperature is in the low 60s. Anglers are catching some nice crappies around the trees in the lake using minnows.

Lake Odessa: We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Geode Lake: Look for the largemouth bass to be in the shallow bays where the bluegills and warmer water temps will be.

Belva Deer Lake: Oh, for a little sunshine. The road crews are working on the main road into the campground side of the park, the final goal will be to have a paved road into the park. Largemouth Bass Fair. With the recent rains look to the upper end of the lake where the marsh dumps into the lake through the tubes to locate some nice fish. Anglers are starting to pick up some bluegills. Look to the bays on the north side of the lake where the sun can warm the water.

Lake fishing has still remained slow as air temperatures and recent showers have kept water temperatures cool. Crappies will be the next in line to spawn in area lakes and river backwaters as water temperatures increase throughout the end of April and into May. Crappies generally spawn when water temperatures are between 56 and 64 degrees.

Lake Darling District Farm Ponds: Water is warming up, and the fishing is turning on. Be sure to ask permission before fishing private farm ponds. Largemouth Bass Good. Crappie Good.

Cedar River (Moscow to Columbus Junction): The river at Conesville is expected to be reach flood stage by Saturday and return to its banks by Monday without further rain.

Iowa River (Columbus Junction to Mississippi River): The Iowa and Columbus Junction is forecasted to reach flood stage late Saturday as the Cedar adds it flood stage waters to the Iowa.

Mississippi River Pool 16: River stage at Lock and Dam 15 is 11.52 feet and rising. A few largemouth bass are being caught in Sunset Marina on crankbaits and spinner baits. A few saugers are being caught on jigs and minnows in Sylvan Slough. A few walleyes are being caught in Sylvan Slough on jigs and minnows. A few white bass are being caught in Sylvan Slough on in-line spinners or casting jigs and twisters. Crappies are being caught in the Andalusia Island backwater complex on jigs and minnows or floating minnows under a bobber. Larger crappies are being caught in deeper water off brush piles while smaller fish are being caught up shallow. Crappies are also being caught in Sunset Marina fishing minnows under bobbers around the public docks. Bluegill Slow. A few channel catfish are being picked up around Sunset Marina on night crawlers and shad.

Mississippi River Pool 17: River stage at Lock and Dam 16 is 10.46 feet and rising. The gates are out of the water at the dam. Crappie Slow Sauger Slow Walleye Slow Channel Catfish Slow Bluegill Slow

Mississippi River Pool 18: River stage at Lock and Dam 17 is 12.33 feet and rising. With current river stage predictions, the Toolesboro landing could be underwater by this weekend. Crappies are being picked up in the backwaters around brush piles and stump fields on jigs and minnows or floating minnows under bobbers. Sauger Slow. Walleye Slow. Channel catfish are being caught on liver and night crawlers. Bluegills are being caught on pieces of worm and wax worms floating under a bobber in the backwaters.

Mississippi River Pool 19: River stage at Lock and Dam 18 is 6.45 feet. Some crappies are being caught in the backwaters on minnows. Sauger Slow. Walleye Slow. Some channel catfish are being caught on night crawlers and chicken livers. Bluegill Slow.

Mississippi River Pools 16-20: With recent heavy rains river levels are on the rise. Main channel water temperature is around 58 degrees. Take caution of floating debris when boating on the river.

Lake Macbride: Water temperature ranges from 56-58 degrees in most of the lake. The water has a brownish stain to it. Some more crappies are being caught now. Most catches have come off brush in 8-12 feet of water. Some anglers trolling crankbaits for walleyes and wipers have even picked up a few.

Hannen Lake: The park road is closed right now due to road construction. Contractors are hoping to have it open before Mothers Day weekend.

Iowa Lake: We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Kent Park Lake: We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Lake of the Hills: The numbers of people fishing is picking up as the weather improves. Crappies are hitting on worms in the shallows. Find largemouth bass by slow-rolling spinner baits near cover in the shallow coves. Rainbow trout catches have been intermittent. Catfishing has been slow. Bluegills are hitting on worms in the shallows.

Lake Wapello: The lake was completely drained during the summer of 2008. Repairs have been made and the gate is now shut so the lake can start re-filling. Now would be a good opportunity to check out the new habitat that has been added while the lake was drained.

Red Haw Lake: We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Hawthorn Lake (aka Barnes City Lake): We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Otter Creek Lake: We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Union Grove Lake: We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Pleasant Creek Lake: Water temperature is in the low 50s and water clarity is extremely good. Crappie Fair. Fish around brush piles and stumps in 6-8 feet of water. You can usually see the fish and cast to them. Try small jigs or minnows under a bobber.

Diamond Lake: Many smaller crappies (6-9 inches) are moving shallower and hanging around shallow brush. Fish for them with small jigs. Remember, minnows are not allowed here. Some bonus walleyes are also being caught. Live bait has produced best for these. Bluegills are being caught around shallow brush on worms or small jigs. Lake fishing has picked up a bit with water temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. However, most river conditions are high and unfishable.

Lake Sugema: Crappie Fair. Use small jigs tipped with a minnow or wax worm. Try different locations until you find active fish. Walleye Slow. Use jigs tipped with a minnow along the rocky shorelines. Bluegill Fair. Use small jigs tipped with a night crawler. Try a variety of depths.

Lake Keomah: We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Lake Miami: Largemouth bass have been hitting on soft plastics and spinner baits. Crappie Fair. Use small jigs in different colors to see which one works the best. The area with the best action so far has been along the dam and areas of the shoreline. Channel catfish have been biting on dead minnows or night crawlers. Bluegill Fair. Use small jigs fished along the dam and shoreline.

Rathbun District Farm Ponds: Catches of crappie and largemouth bass have been reported. Be sure to ask permission before fishing private farm ponds. Largemouth Bass Good Crappie Good

Rathbun Reservoir: Lake Rathbun water temperature is in the lower 50s. Due to rains over the weekend the lake level has risen and is currently at 908.1 which is four feet above regular pool. Some boat ramps are being repaired so they will be closed.

Currently work is being done at the Buck Creek marina ramp, Dedication site high water ramp and Bridgeview. Bridgeview boat ramp is due to re-open on Friday, May 1. Currently County Road J5T is closed going across the dam. Follow detour signs. Crappie Slow Some crappies are being caught using small jigs fished around areas with structure in 10-12 feet of water. Channel Catfish Fair Use night crawlers or cut bait to catch channel catfish back in the coves and bays.

Mississippi River Pool 16

River stage at Lock and Dam 15 is 8.13 feet. River stage is forecast to fall throughout the weekend. Channel Catfish - Good: Channel catfish are being caught on leeches and dead minnows fished around wing dams. Some channel catfish are also being caught along the Moline River front (pool 15). White Bass - Good: White bass are being caught in Sylvan Slough and on the wing dams on in-line spinners or casting jigs and minnows. Bluegill - Good: Bluegill fishing has been good in Sunset Marina on small worms and minnows. Largemouth Bass - Fair: A few largemouth bass are being caught in Sunset Marina on crankbaits and spinner baits. They are also being caught in the Andalusia Island backwater complex. Crappie - Good: Crappies are being caught in the Andalusia Island backwater complex on jigs and minnows or floating minnows under a bobber. Larger crappies are being caught in deeper water off brush piles while smaller fish are being caught up shallow. Mississippi River Pool 17

River stage at Lock and Dam 16 is 7.17 feet and forecast to fall throughout the weekend. The ramp at Big Timber is open. Most fishing reports are coming from area lakes and farm ponds. The road crews are making good progress on the road project but it is still a work in progress. Lake of the Hills

A more stable weather pattern this week has improved the fishing and brought the anglers out. Rainbow Trout - Slow: Trout fishing continues to be hit or miss. Try spinners or worms along the face of the dam. Bluegill - Good: Bluegills are being caught in shallow all along the shoreline floating a worm. Go to the back of the coves. Largemouth Bass - Good: Spinner baits and plastic/jigs are having success around the habitat. Crappie - Good: Crappies are being caught on minnows or small jigs. Fish around brush piles and the fishing dock.

Lake Darling

The lake is drained. Although recent heavy rains have made it appear otherwise.

Skunk River (Rose Hill to Coppock)

The water level is dropping very quickly. It is reaching its "average" level for this time of year. Not much fishing activity lately because of last week's very heavy rains.

Iowa River (Columbus Junction to Mississippi River)

The water level is dropping fairly fast. Because of the recent high water there hasn't been much activity on the river lately.

Hannen Lake

We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week. Bluegill - Fair: Some nicer bluegills are being caught on small jigs or worms. Try shallow flats or brush.

Iowa Lake

Bluegill - Fair: The bluegills are starting to move in shallow for the upcoming spawn. Fish around shallow structure with a small jig or worm. Crappie - Good: Some catches of 8-9 inch crappies are being reported. Fish around shallow brush/rock or in and around the stake beds. Redear Sunfish - No Report: Our electro-fishing survey showed good numbers of redears moving into the shallow flats, although no catches have been reported.

Kent Park Lake

Anglers are catching fish in some of their ponds as well. Bluegill - Good: Bluegill fishing has been picking up around shallow brush. Largemouth Bass - Good: Bass are also cruising in the shallows in preparation for the spawn. Crankbaits and soft plastics have been producing best. Crappie - Fair: Some crappies are being picked up around the brush piles on jigs or minnows.

Lake Macbride

Last week’s cold nights slowed the bite and pushed some crappies off the bank. However, with the recent warm weather, surface temps are back in the mid 60s and fish are moving back in. Largemouth Bass - Good: Bass are moving up to find nesting spots for the spawn. Fish shallow with fast moving baits to trigger a reaction bite, or fish slowly with plastics for bedding fish. Crappie - Excellent: Spawning fish can be found on many shallow rock banks. The best banks contain brush. Cast small jigs with or without minnows around the structure.

Pleasant Creek Lake

White Bass - Fair: Some white bass have been picked along the dam on crankbaits. Bluegill - Fair: Some bluegills are being picked up on small worms around rock and brush. Largemouth Bass - Fair: Try a variety of artificials and even night crawlers around the jetties, dam, and brush. Remember, largemouth have to be 18 inches to keep.

Diamond Lake

Remember, no minnows are allowed here. Crappie - Good: MANY small crappies (6-7 inch) are being caught in the shallows. Some 9 inch crappies are being caught as well.

Otter Creek Lake

Channel Catfish - Fair: Channel catfish are showing up in the fish cleaning station, so some are being caught. Bluegill - Good: Some nice sized bluegill are being caught. Look for them around downed trees and spawning flats. Yellow Bass - Excellent: The yellow bass bite has been good, however, size is marginal. Expect many 6-8 inch fish with some larger ones possible. Use jigs or spinners around shallow rock for best results.

Union Grove Lake

Coralville Reservoir

The reservoir is projected to fall about 3 feet in the next week. Water clarity has been decent. No catches have been reported.

Most lakes have water temperature in the low to mid 60s. This has resulted in crappies up shallow spawning, and bass/bluegill moving up in preparation for their spawn.

Lake Wapello

The lake was completely drained during the summer of 2008. Repairs have been made and the gate is now shut and the lake is re-filling.

Red Haw Lake

Lake Rathbun water temperature is in the lower 60s. The lake level is currently at 909.59 which is almost six feet above normal pool. County Road J5T is now open going across the dam. Channel Catfish - Fair: Use night crawlers or cut bait to catch channel catfish in the coves and bays. Crappie - Slow: Some crappies are being caught using small jigs tipped with a minnow fished around areas with structure in 10-12 feet of water. Crappies are also being caught around flooded vegetation along the shoreline. Fishing has been better in the afternoons as the surface water temperature rises.

Try areas with some underwater structure or a change in depth. Crappie - Slow: Crappies are being caught around flooded vegetation along the shoreline. South Fork has been producing some crappies as well as the far northwest parts of the reservoir. Walleye - Fair: Try drifting night crawlers or trolling crankbaits around underwater islands and ridges.

Rathbun District Farm Ponds

Crappies and bluegills have been hitting in area farm ponds. Largemouth bass are also being caught. Be sure to ask permission before fishing private farm ponds.

Lake Odessa

Wildlife is lowering the water to reach the summer levels. Channel Catfish - Good: Anglers continue to catch a lot of channel catfish.

Try either cut bait or night crawlers. Some of the better ones are averaging 2.5 to 6.5 pounds. Bluegill - Good: Bluegill fishing is picking up with lots of fish in the 8 inch range being caught.

Lake Geode

Water conditions were very poor earlier this week. The lake was muddy with water clarity of about only 6 inches. The lake does clear fairly quickly if we don't get much more rain. Bluegill - Good: Water temps are just under 70 degrees so there are a few males in looking around but the spawning season has yet to begin. Crappie - Slow: The crappies have returned to deeper water there are just a few small ones in shallow. Redear Sunfish - Good: The redears are starting to nest in earnest now. Look for them to be back in the shallow bays.

Lake Belva Deer

The road crews are making good progress on the road project but it is still a work in progress. This year they are preparing the road bed and the paving will occur next year after the road bed has had a winter to settle. The surface will remain gravel this year. A detour map is available at the Keokuk CCB website. Bluegill - Fair: Water temperature is right around 69 to 70 with the recent cooler weather. There are a few of the males in shallow at the upper end of the lake looking to build nests. Largemouth Bass - Good: There are a good number of bass just off the rocks along the face of the dam. Crappie - Fair: The spawn seems to be over. There are still some smaller immature fish in shallow. Redear Sunfish - Good: The redears are nesting now so if you can catch them they are on the beds.

Pollmiller Park Lake

Channel Catfish - Good: fish are being caught using chicken liver and night crawlers. Bluegill - Good: Use light tackle and small baits such as wax worms or pieces of crawler suspended under a bobber. Largemouth Bass - Good: The anglers are catching them on all kinds of stuff.

Lake Darling

The lake is drained. Most of the water is back out of the lake.

Skunk River (Rose Hill to Coppock)

The water levels went up from last week. They look to be dropping again, but more rain is in the weekend forecast. Channel Catfish - Excellent: Anglers are catching good numbers of catfish right now. I would target any creeks or drainage ditches that are running muddy water into the river as the catfish will target these for food being washed in by the rain.

Iowa River (Columbus Junction to Mississippi River)

The water level is dropping fairly steadily now. Flathead Catfish - Good: For the last couple of weeks anglers have been catching some nice flatheads on the bank lines

Hannen Lake

Bluegill - Fair: Some nicer bluegills are being caught on small jigs or worms. Try shallow flats or brush.

Iowa Lake

The lake has experienced a small kill off of bluegills and crappies. This is a natural occurrence due to spawning stress and anglers should not be concerned about the health of the lake and/or fish. Bluegill - Fair: Fish around rip rap and brush piles with a small worm or jig. Largemouth Bass - Fair: Fish around shallow structure with artificials or night crawlers. There is an abundance of 13-15 inch bass here, so make sure they are over the 15 inch minimum if you are planning to keep them.

Kent Park Lake

Anglers are also catching fish in some of their ponds as well. Bluegill - Good: Bluegill fishing has been picking up around shallow brush. Largemouth Bass - Good: Bass are also cruising the shallows with the spawn going on. Crankbaits and soft plastics have been producing best.

Lake Macbride

Water temps are around 70 degrees. Remember a 10 hp maximum is now in effect for Lake Macbride. Crappie - Fair: The spawn is over. Some fish are still on the shallow flats, while most fish have moved off to deeper structure. Walleye - Fair: Try pulling crankbaits or live bait rigs around rock or weed lines.

Pleasant Creek Lake

White Bass - Good: Look for schools feeding on the surface. Try top-waters and small crankbaits, especially early and late in the day. Fish are also being caught near the bank on artificial and bobber/minnow. Bluegill - Fair: Some nice bluegills are being picked up on small worms around shallow rock. Largemouth Bass - Good: Try a variety of artificials and even night crawlers around the jetties, dam, and other rock. Remember, largemouth have to be 18 inch to keep. Walleye - Fair: Walleyes are being picked up on live bait. Some are even being caught on bluegills.

Diamond Lake

Remember, no minnows are allowed here. Channel Catfish - Fair: Try around the jetties or up by the causeway with crawlers or chicken livers. Bluegill - Good: Use a small piece of worm around rock or on the shallower flats. Some fish may have also moved out to the brush piles after the spawn.

Otter Creek Lake

Channel Catfish - Fair: Channel catfish are showing up in the fish cleaning station, so some are being caught. Look for these fish around lay downs and rock. Bluegill - Good: Some nice sized bluegill are being caught. Look for them around downed trees and rip rap. Yellow Bass - Good: The yellow bass bite has been good, however, size is marginal. Expect many 6-8 inch fish with some larger ones possible. Fish jigs or spinners around the shallow rock for best results.

Union Grove Lake

We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Coralville Reservoir

The current lake level is 684 feet (as of 6/11) and is projected to fall to 683 feet and hold at this level for the summer. The water temperature is right around 70. Channel Catfish - Fair: Some catfish have moved into the rocks to spawn. Try throwing a jig and crawler or live bait under a bobber around spawning habitat. White Bass - Fair: Some anglers are finding white bass. Run and gun looking for schools of fish near the bank. Small shad colored crankbaits or jigs work best.

Dike Lake

We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.

Most lakes have water temps hovering around 70 degrees. Channel catfish will start spawning and become easier to catch around shallow structure in the coming weeks.

Lake Wapello

The lake was completely drained during the summer of 2008. Repairs have been made and the gate is now shut and the lake is re-filling.

Red Haw Lake

Channel Catfish - Fair: Night crawlers have been the best bait for catching channel catfish. Bluegill - Good: Small jigs have been catching fish along with a chunk of night crawler under a bobber. The best areas have been along the shorelines and around submerged structure. Largemouth Bass - Good: Use soft plastics along the shoreline and around submerged structure. As water temperature continues to rise, try crankbaits and spinner baits. Crappie - Fair: Crappies have been hitting on small jigs fished around structure along the shoreline.

Lake Keomah

Channel Catfish - Slow: Use night crawlers or dead minnows. Bluegill - Fair: Use small jigs tipped with a chunk of night crawler fished along the shoreline. Look for areas with structure. Largemouth Bass - Good: Use soft plastics or jigs fished along submerged structure. Also try areas with rocks.

Lake Rathbun water temperature is in the upper 60s. The lake level is currently at 910.50 feet, which is 6-1/2 feet above normal pool. Channel Catfish - Fair: Use night crawlers or cut bait to catch channel catfish in the coves and bays. White Bass - Good: Use flashy blade baits or chrome colored baits to mimic shad. Try areas with some underwater structure or a change in depth. The area around Island View has been productive. Crappie - Slow: Crappies are being caught around flooded vegetation along the shoreline. A lot of crappies are being caught but most of them are under 8 inches, with an occasional fish over 10 inches. Walleye - Fair: Try drifting night crawlers or trolling crankbaits around underwater islands and ridges. Large numbers of smaller walleye are being caught with an occasional keeper.

I know there is a lake, Arbor?, in the city. Is it any good?I am bringing a car and lots of open water and ice fishing equipment/tackle!

The rains have brought the river to bank full up to minor flood stage around the Wapello area. Water temperature ranges between 76 and 80 degrees. Flathead Catfish - Slow: Anglers have seen a big drop in the number of flatheads being caught. The up and down water levels can't be helping any.

The hot, muggy weather and numerous storm fronts have slowed fishing at Lake-of-the-Hills. Fish early in the morning, late in the evening, or in shady areas. Rainbow Trout - Slow: No reported catches. Channel Catfish - Fair: Find throughout the lake using night crawlers, stink bait, and chicken liver. Bluegill - Good: Bluegills are starting to come off the beds. Use small jigs tipped with wax worms or pieces of night crawlers. Largemouth Bass - Fair: Use traditional bass baits. Experiment with water depth until you find fish. Crappie - Slow: No significant catches reported.

Hannen Lake

Iowa Lake

Kent Park Lake

Could I ice fish in this area in late December to mid January? Would I have to walk out or could I drive a small Saturn out there? I'm hoping the ice fishing is as good in Iowa as in Minnesota!

As said before, Rock Creek is probably your closest larger lake. I've heard Arbor can be good, but know nothing about it personally. Diamond and Hawthorne Lake are also fairly close and can also be good. As far as driving on the ice, that can be pretty iffy around here. Some years safe ice comes and goes, although the last couple years have been pretty decent. If you get acquainted with someone local, Iowa has some awesome farm pond fishing, if you can get access to them. As far as first ice, usually around Christmas, maybe a little earlier we can get on the ice. Some are predicting an early winter, that would bode well for us ice fishermen.

I have all the equipment (hand and power auger, depthfinder, gps, rods/reels, plenty of tackle) so I am willing to search for the fish I was just wondering if it's worth it on these lakes or any other ones?

Most lakes around here have crappies, some bluegills, bass and catfish. Crappies are the main target for the most part. It's not too hard to find them, but the size is sometimes not the best. I live about 30 miles north of Grinnell, near Union Grove lake, it gives up a lot of crappies every year, but a 10 incher is a mighty good one there. Hawthorne used to be a great crappie lake a few years ago, but I haven't heard much about it lately. Diamond can be really good at times. Check in when season rolls around, I'll help you as much as I can.

I'm leaving next friday for Grinnell, any recent reports? (I've read the ones on the DNR HSOforum) Also what should I bring in terms of fishing equipment for fall/open water? I'm thinkin a few spinning rods with tackle for catfish, bass and panfish. Any tips or advice on tackle or lakes would be awsome!

Sorry it took so long for a reply, I was in Minnesota fishing last week, and our computer was in the shop til today. If you bring a med. action spinning rod and a lite action, you should be good to go. I usually carry a couple of each with me in the boat, and that's all I use unless I'm on the river for catfish, then I might take a little heavier baitcaster. Personally I'm a live bait guy, so little hooks, split shot and slip bobbers are my main tackle, but smaller jigs and twister tails come in handy sometimes, and I usually carry a few small Mepps spinners and a couple Rapalas along also. If you are gonna catfish in the area, as far as I'm concerned it's hard to beat chicken liver for eating size cats. I ain't been fishing around here for a couple weeks now, but hopefully that will change this weekend.
