Hey BJDavey,

You heard a pretty accurate conditions report for the islands...the ice road over to Mad. Island is now open for light traffic but anywhere but the ice road where there is no snow and thicker ice, is an iffy proposition. Last year about this time I drove over to the east side of Madeline & headed north for a reef off of the devil's cauldron first in shallow for big splake and browns (no luck) but then out deep for this big boy...marked lots of fish, he bit light like a finnicky walleye...that is until he realized he was hooked, 45 minutes later this 18lb native redfin used up all my adreniline. (tried dragging the picture into the reply didn't work)
Craig at OutDoorAllure.com on the way to Washburn always has the latest bobbing info and yes there are many dangerous areas this year because the ice is thin under all the snow, some high current areas have actually lost ice. Sounds like it might cool down enough to make good ice lock in all the way to gull shoals (before the next northeast gale tears it all out again...
Due to the work week i'm limited to weekends but i could be interested in hooking up sometime (I usually drag an 18 ft canoe with for safety...

Hey guys was out today for a bit.. current was horrible.. was in between Bayfield and Madeline and could hardly get a 3 ounce spoon to stick to the bottom.... so I would watch the ice if you are heading out into the islands.... but I did hear people are going off of Raspberry Bay now out around Oak Island but who knows with the winds the past two days.. the ice has came and gone out of Rasperry a couple times already... Hopefully the current dies down some here... gonna be out tomorrow and we will see how it goes.... BlackJack.. the slush is pretty bad on the west side of Basswood from what I hear and see.. but most people have been going through the North Channel and then around as of late.. not as much slush this way to get to Hermit... I was out in the channel last week and had 14 inches of ice in the spots I fished.. but then another guy told me he drilled a hole on 4 inches... so some spots got froze well while others didnt with the snow and the big currents... so just watch yourself as most of the packed trails from other sleds have drifted over... Good Luck

Thanks for the extra info guys thats what i love about lake trout bobbing you have to know the conditions! and you are right Craig at out door allure always has good info we have been fiends for many years and have fished together often. thats sound like one heck of a battle you had with that redfin my budding caught a 22 pounder off the Hermit island quary last year and i had one straighten out my hook 10 min before he hooked his hog there were some big fish down there that day. Have never bobbed by Rasperry Island do you still go out of redcliff or frog bay? If conditions are not good for me on Mon Tues Wed to bob the islands i will try along the Houghton point long island area.
