Not even sure if that's the correct way to say it as I'm as mechanically inclined as a Nat!!

Anyway, driving my 2000 Durango yesterday the Check Guages light came on. I looked and the Amp Guage was pegged at 18 and in the red. I got to the airport and stopped to pick up a friend. When I started driving again it was fine. What would cause this and do I need to be concerned?
