Balsam and Deer Lake reports

Recommended Posts

I was gone fishin Friday, Saturday and part of today. Boy, most of those lakes were right under my nose. Have fished em all.

As for Protrapper talking about East Balsam or the stumps it is the stumps. Gotta sort but can end up with nice gills...12 to 13 feet of water. As for your comment about people getting 11-12" gills...well ya gotta show me. Most gills I catch that are one pound are about 10 1/4 inches to 10/1/2. That limit I referred to, most were just shy of 10/1/2 inches.

Fished Clam Flowage and it did okay if you consider fishing most of the day for a limit. Nice fish...but lots of dead time between action. Learned a trick a few weeks back from a young "fellar" that moved to the Danbury area from Michigan. We were catching a few of those nicer gills on the Flowage, but he was "honkin" em in...
What was strange was we found you could hardly move the bait and had to watch for the slightest movement while he was jigging the heck out of his. I went over and talked to him and he was using a size 14 black fly. It was tied on a regular hook, used lead wire and black thread. They were very small bodied. Above that about 15 inches he had a small sinker. He would jig the heck out of it and the fly must have jumped and would settle back and jump. The nicer gills could not resist. He also tipped it with one spike/wiggler. I since have used that and outfish my friends 3 to 1.

Discovered a technique for first ice out fly fishing that has worked wonders...When you have boats troll up with their electrics and say..what the "H" are you doing. I will always share my "secret"..course as you know, thats 50% of it..then there's the experience etc.

Fished Balasam tonight 1 small crappie and 1 jumbo perch. Funny thing I marked alot of fish as green marks on my vexilar but they would not stay long enough to be orange or red, just passing through I guess. The fishing has been terrible the last month.

I fished Loveless alot last year and did quite well was going to go out there yesterday but only one vehicle track and to the left of the landing there was a big circle of posts with reflectors on them like they were marking a hole in the ice or something.
Not want to fish for 1/2 ton truck so did not go out went to Long Lake insted.

How did you do in Long. My dad has a cabin on a lake next to Bone. I fish this area every weekend in the summer but am new to ice fishing. I will be up this weekend and another lake I was considering was Halfmoon.

Thanks for the info.

I did real good on Long Lake a couple of weeks ago but was real slow last time I was out.
You can fish Bone Lake and catch all kinds of small perch they are not real big but fun to catch.
Good Luck

Went to Balsam Tuesday in those 40 mile an hour winds...GEEEEEEZZZ! Saw a permanent shack take a dive while we were there. Got there about 11:00 a.m and the fish were biting right away. Couldnt get your line down the hole. Had to sort but had about 15 nice gills and they shut down to a crawl. The three of us each had between 15 and 20 when we left at 2:00pm. Cant wait for warmer weather and NO WIND!!!!

I am thinking about Wapogasset this weekend, just wondering if anyone would know how much snow is on this lake? Any reports of northern/walleye would be great also. I have not fished this lake for at least five years. Thanks.

Coach, I don't know about Dresser or Oceola but I know on Highway 8 in St. Croix Falls there is a good bait and tackle shop called St. Croix Outdoors.South side of the road, maybe a 1/2 mile west of Highway 35.Good Luck Fishing!!! Oh yeah,if your going to Wappo you could go north of Amery to Gen's bait on Highway 46 for reports or info.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
