25 Merc. ?

'96 25 Merc. Does'nt go in reverse all ythe time. When it does'nt the shifting knob is tight. Checked the cables, they are good. When I move the prop by hand it almost always will go into reverse. What the heck? Help!!

On a buddy's Mariner it was the upper drive shaft bearing.
