1969 johnson 55 hp starting and shifting

HI I have a 1969 johnson 55 hp hydroelectric engine. There is three controls on it. The shifter, throttle, and then there is a toggle switch witch has three positions. I know it needs to be in neatrual and the throttle has to be in the start position, but I am wondering what position the toggle switch has to be in to run. The guy I bought it from did not tell me that.I would apperciate the help.

Sounds like your fast idle. Some controls don't use that lever, instead you disengage the sift and push the throttle froward to fast idle.

I should have read better. Toggle switch, scratch the fast idle lever.

It could be trim switch. Can you post a picture.
