Using sonar/gps from boat on ice

I have a Lowrance Lms-320. It's a sonar/gps in one unit. What I would like to do is mount it on a blue box and just use the gps. I don't know if this will damage the sonar part, I won't have a transducer hooked up to it. I have the Fishing Hotspots chip and would like to use that on the lakes in it. When you go to gander mtn. they always have sonars running so I think it will work ok. Also I have a Lowrance I-finder, people have told me I can get the hotspots chip to work in that too. I haven't been able to get it to work, so if anyone knows how to do that let me know.
