Bunk Trailer? Which way is the best route to go?

I am looking for some opinions on putting guides on my trailer for my 18' Deep V to make for easier power loading I have 2 different ideas in mind one I thought of and have seen was the the side bunks (if you will) or the horizontal 2x4's covered with carpet or my uncle used to have the uprights just behind the fenders and they had pvc pipe over the steel so I guess what I'm looking for is the pro's and con's of each way and also the position where they will work the best I was thinking of using 1x1x1/8" square tubing will this be strong enough considering I weld everything solid?
