Im going to be down there this weekend and was wondering if anyone could tell me the regulations for the Root river in that area. I looked in the DNR book, it has lots of different regs for the root, I couldnt tell what part that area is though.

Preston is located on the south branch, Lanesboro is also located on the south branch. The north branch meets up with the south branch just north of Lanesboro. The special regulations in place are for winter on the south branch; trout 12-16 inches are protected in a marked section in Forestville Mystery Cave State Park. So follow the general regulations for Fillmore county; 5 combined with not one over 16".

There are special catch and release regulations on the South Fork of the Root, but that is southwest of the main branch by Houston near Tawney and Amherst. Doesn't sound like you'll be over that way.

For this and future trips I'd suggest a good map. Give a call to the Lanesboro DNR (507-467-2442). They're usually in the know about good places to try, although most of them are fly anglers and will protect their honey holes \:\)
