Dan,
From my experiences the minnows tend to slow down and die after 10 to 12 minutes of squirming and bleeding on the hook. Due to the low water clarity of the lakes I typically fish the smell and vibrations of the wounded minnow struggling on the hook are vey important in triggering bites.
