Trout through the ice...newbie questions

There is a lake around campus, Big Watab, here that holds trout (rainbows and some browns), and I was wondering about catching them through the ice. Is it like panfishing? And how about the depth? I would assume that the MO is small jigs with waxworms, or am I better off with a minnow. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

This has been discussed in depth very recently on this forum. I suggest reading this post for more information on how to catch stream trout through the ice. You might want to also check out last week's podcast as well. There is a lot of information posted in this trout forum, I suggest spending some time reading through the old posts.

Good luck!

I've only fished Big Watab in the summer and we used riggers and had a ball. most fish we caught were 14-15"s and tasted great. Deadheads right about info on this in other posts. I would go with 4#test and 1/32 jigs and waxies on slip bobber with a split up the line about 1/4 oz. just to get down a little faster. close the windows up in your house and possibly sight fish them to figure them out faster. good luck
