Anyone hunt grouse or other upland on horseback?

Just curious if you use dog(s), get off and shoot or stay in your seat? Told the wife the next one she trains I would like to try painting blaze come grouse season and hit the trails. I think the dog would be rather confused the first couple of times since she thinks they produce doggy treats and run in circles for a living...

I've never hunted off horseback, but there are plenty of horseback trials in MN and the Dakotas. In the prairies of ND they do some horseback hunting for sharptails and pheasants and huns. I would love to try it.

Strap yourself in...you don't want the horse to take off when you touch off a round on a ringneck.

My wife does it all the time. She has three of our shorthairs trained to heel to the horse. Funny to watch as they are coming down the road. When the grandsons are here in the summer they ride with her. When the dogs go on point she rides up there put him down, he runs over and flushes the bird then grandma hoist him back up and off they go looking for another one. Great work out for the dogs. PS this is a late summer/ early fall persuit to avoid the babies.
