hawgeye
Looking for information on where to walk out of in the ashland area and any general areas to head to. Is it mostly all sled travel or do guys walk out? any help appreciatedDave
Jim Hudson
DaveFew areas to walk out from.. Your best bet, and easiest spot right now is over by Washburn, off the coal dock area.. Walk out and find 25 to 40 FOW... Trout, perch, burbot, whitefish, smelt herring, and coho all along that area.. Near Ashland, you could walk out from the Oredock Area (Kreher Park) or the Coal Dock area there.. Fish the shipping channel or walk further out to the lighthouse area (quite a hike, but doable). Same type of species to catch... As ice grows northward, there are other areas to walk near the Sioux and Onion river.. And off the public launches and beaches near Bayfield and Red Cliff as well (no ice up here yet). But hopefully with the cold snap coming, we ice in up north too. Good luck. hawgeye
Jim,Thanks for the info. Any types of lures or baits that you recommend? In duluth I usually use small pimples with crappie minnows for the cohos. Are there walleyes in the Washburn area or mostly in Ashland? thanks for any help,Dave
Jim Hudson
Pimples, Kastmasters, Lindy Frostees, Lindy Rattln Flyer Spoons, Nils Master jigging Shads, Chubby Darters.. All good lures... As well as Hali Chain Droppers..Walleyes are throughout the bay, from Washburn to Ashland.. They seem a bit deep this year, like 30 to 40 FOW, is where most big fish are coming from.. Not very consistant though.. One here and one there.. Changes year to year with the forage...
hawgeye
Jim,thanks for hte info. We walked out of Washburn and fished in 40' of water. 3 of us got skunked. Didn't mark a fish all day and it was way too cold to bop around. Talked to some guys on sleds who caught fish in 70' of water. Next time I'll have some transportation with. thanks again for the help and have a good one,Dave
