Clam 2000

I have not used the Clam 2000, but I do have a Clam 4600, which is I think about the same thing but with a little more headroom. I think the 2000 basically replaced the 4600, both are about 4'x 6'. I like my 4600 for use in the right situations, it's basically a 1 man house if you want to use 2 lines, have a heater and a Vex, and a little elbow room, but I have fished in it with my 10 year old daughter and a couple of times another adult, so for the occassional times when you want to take someone with, it should work, but you may feel a little cramped on those outings. The thing you may want to look at is how do you get to the ice, and how mobile do you want to be? The suitcase style houses like this are usually a better choice if you typically drive out in your truck, etc. as opposed to going out on a snowmobile or ATV, as they don't give you as much capacity to haul gear as the sled type flip-over styles such as the various Fishtraps and other models.

I just got the clam 2000 for christmas as my first ever icehouse. I really like it so far, its really roomy for one person as i am by myself most of the time so you can fit your gear and heater on oneside and fish two holes. it does get a little tiring dragging it and carrying armfuls of gear at the same time since i usually fill up the room on top of it quickly. Today i had another guy with me for a little bit and it works for two people as well tho its a pretty tight fit.

I've got the Clam junior which is the same as the 2000(I believe, just older) and it is a nice unit. It's perfect for my 2 boys. The only draw back is it's not the easiest thing to pull by hand loaded down with equipment. If your going to be flying solo most of the time I'd look at the Fish Trap Scout or Pro. It's nice once you can drive out.

I just got a 2000 this year as well, perfect for one person. A little tight for two, but it works. I lost a couple of the sliver little hooks that are used to keep it collasped while in transit, and I wrote to clam to see if I could buy a few more just to have. They ended up sending me them for nothing. Great customer service, I got them the very next day. I think I am going to fill the bottom in with styrofoam and a hot glue gun to make it a bit more sturdy and keep some heat in on the floor.

Take into consideration the length of fishing rods you use(in combination with your belt size grin.gif). Often I like to fish with longer rods (32-36"), and there just wasn't enough room in this shelter with those rods. Perhaps you could sit at a different angle and make it work, but it wasn't right for me. With the standard 24" rods, it works well.

Another word of advice, I bought a cargo net from Northern Tool that fits over the entire folded up fish house. Keeps all your gear secure while moving about. A huge help. I think it was ten bucks give or take.

Yup, I can get all my gear under it. I actually took off about nine hooks from the sides of the cargo net, so it would stop getting hung up on everything it came in contact with. Three hooks on every side is plenty, plus you have alot of spares if any fall off. I also wanted to tell you, that I made a little stand out of plastic about 14" deep and 11" wide maybe 8" high, it fits right in between the two square holes, perfect for the heater too sit on, or the flasher to sit on in warmer weather. Kinda of a tight squeeze in there with two people and all types of gear, so the stand is almost a must. Maybe wood, or something store bought like a little plastic drawer or something would do the trick too! I will take and post a pic when I go out next (tomorrow)!!

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
