Ball joints in 02 Ford Superduty

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if any of you out there ever had to get them replaced and the cost? I just had them done, uppers and lowers, outer tierods, and wheel seals and it cost $993 after a wheel alignment. I was wondering if this sounded fair or not? I went to a mechaninic that I have been using for quite some time and really didn't check around. I didn't realize how noisy the frontend was until this was done. She rides like a caddy now. tongue.gif A caddy that could pull your house down. grin.gif

Thats about the right price. These big trucks have alot of weight on the front ends, if its a diesel it adds to the wear, or if you have a plow on it, thats really hard on the ball joints. The bigger the toys, the bigger the repair bill! smirk.gif

Did you have greasable ones installed? Those are the only ones to put in, the factory ones were sealed units.

Did the 99 F250 at 150K miles and put in Precision greasable ball joints and at 251K miles they seem as stiff as the day they were installed. Not sure what I paid exactly but I know the ball joints were $240 for four and labor was $350 but also had rotors, calipers, u-joints, and warn hubs installed at the same time.

The 00 Excursion had both sides done as well, one side last Winter (165K miles) the other side this Winter (175K miles). This time found a good parts store and got McQuid (sp?) greasables for $19 ach for the tops and $24 each for the bottoms. My regular mechanic did these at his regular shop rate of around $35 an hour.

Last Winter also had ball joints put in the 99 F350 DRW, used the same ball joints as the X.

Hub assemblies will be the next thing you may need to replace. Not sure how but the F250's are original but at 120K miles the DRW driver side failed and at 165K miles the driver side on the X failed. Not sure why but the ball joints also seem to fail first on the driver side, could be road salt.

I don't claim to KNOW, but I've been "researching" getting mine done on my 2002 S-10 ZR2 (155K)... I've been quoted $850 at multiple places, so from what I'm hearing for the same work on a smaller truck, the $993 you paid doesn't sound TOO bad.

The job pays 5.9 hours x shop rate of $??.??

Oe parts will run you about $350-$400 with seals, orings,ect..

plus an alignment! You are right in the ball park.

Now you can subtract from that if they are installing aftermarket parts, or if the shop rate is cheaper.

Sounds about right. Greasable ones are the way to go if you plan to grease them. The OE ones are actually better if you don't do the maintenance.

I think it's worth the money because it is not a fun job.

I definetly had greasable joints put in. The only down fall to the whole thing is the mech. accidently wacked my wheelwell with a breakerbar or something and now the truck gets to sit in the shop a little longer. Thank god they fessed up to it. Needless to say they lost all of their labor.

I did this job myself. It took me a whole day but I saved about $800. I had to "rent" a tool from local auto parts store and I found a HSOforum that walked me thru the whole thing, along with making a special tool to press on seals.
