Questions '02 and '03

I was reading somewhere else in this forum about favorite ice fishing trips, someone said LOW and URL.Myself ,my wife ,and my fishing partner are planning such a trip the weekend of 2-07 We plan to go to LOW first and we need to know what to do with our walleye catch once we get to URL.My fishing partner says he thinks its OK to bring them on URL as long as we have the skins still on the fish ( because a CO will be able to see that we have sauger with the walleyes and there are no sauger in URL.)I told him hes full of it. Can we leave our catch with a friendly resort owner or what? any help will be appreciated.

DON'T bring them out on to URL!!! It could result in a BIG fine if you do and get checked. Most, if not all of the resorts, including the WW will allow you to stash them in their freezer. I believe that they must be identifiable and also labeled. might want to call the WW or hudecs and find out though. Personally I wouldn't chance it....

This should answer your questions, it is from the DNR fishing regulations...

-- Licensed anglers and resident children under 16 may transport up to a possession limit of any fish species. However, fish must be packaged in such a way that they can be readily unwrapped, separated,identified, and counted.
-- Northern pike and walleye may be transported dressed or as fillets,
but must retain a 1-square-inch patch of skin. Exception: Northern pike and walleye must be undressed while on experimental or special regulation waters. Other fish species with statewide length limits
(muskellunge, sturgeon, splake, brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, and salmon) must be transported undressed so that they can be
measured.
-- A fish cannot be reduced to more than two fillets.
--All dressed fish and fillets must have a 1-square-inch patch of skin with scales intact from a portion of the body other than the belly. Sauger prepared in this manner are counted as walleye. The exceptions are bullhead, sunfish, and crappie, which may be completely filleted and skinned.

All this info is available on the DNR HSOforum, I don't know how the DNR would treat fish you have with you in a house, as to whether they count towards your possession limit or daily limit... Especially on Red, I would not bring them out there...

Red Lake, Upper and its tributaries:
Walleye: Closed to the taking of walleye. It is unlawful to have any walleye in possession regardless of where taken while on or fishing this water.

Also, the saugers would count as walleyes if they are filleted and only have the 1 square inch of skin.

I would talk to a resort for storage.

Have fun. I would love to hit both LOW and URL, but I don't think that is going to happen this year.

Most of the resorts will hold your walleyes, I have done it many times. Mine are frozen with the skin on already. Put them in a large playmate cooler with your name on the cooler. Most places on URL are very accomadating. Have fun!
