OK, I went to the local(to owatonna) sporting store today to get some info on the local lakes and pick up some bait.
Well the "big store" didn't have any idea of how the ice is and the bait i got was HALF dead!!!!
Thats right I got a container of glow wax's and was told there was about 80 in the container.
After checking I found there was only 40 and 28 of those where black and dead.
I guess i should have just drove to Faribault and saved myself $5.00 at least i could have found out how the ice is at Shields...

P.S. I done complaining now.....lol

Thats why you need to open the container and examine them yourself. This is a common occurence with waxies. I was careless enough and bought one with some dead ones in it the other day rather than digging through it first like I should. Same goes for Nightcrawlers, leeches, or any other live bait that comes in a container-- you should allways check first! I bought a thing of leeches last year at fleet farm, and found all but 2 to be quite dead! Live bait will keep for a long time if properly refrigerated; but at the same time, things like leeches and waxies will die if the water or sawdust isn't changed on a semi regular basis. Also, larger stores such as Fleet Farm and Cabelas might keep their bait longer as they buy and keep more of it on their shelves. And if you buy maggots for ice fishing-- remember they will turn into flies if you keep them for too long! Meal(red) worms will turn into beatles!

Tell me about bugs that hatch!.....A few years ago, I absent mindedly emptied some supposedly dead ones in the garbage can in the kitchen and then left for the weekend......long story short, it was an infestation that had small white winged critters flying/hatching in the house for a couple of years. Good thing I was the only one in the house that had a hunch as to why! Better they didn't know! I was much more careful after that!...........T
