Well, ice fishing is well underway. How is it going around the state? Any biggens gettin hauled in?
Anyone spearing? The lake that I live near, the water is really murky. Why is that? How is the water in other lakes? I figured that it would be clear because of no rain this fall...

Just got the spear house out on a Northern Metro lake yesterday but it was dark by the time it was set up. I plan on hitting the ice on Tue for the first time so I'll let you know how things go spearing and fishing (not at the same time) from the big hole. We rarely see big pike and have yet to spear one over 4lbs (of the 3 pike we've speared in the past 4 years). However, the big muskies are everywhere and a lot of fun to watch.

We recognize individuals in the 10-25lb range and there is even one that is HUGE, we call her Jaws wink.gif. Two years ago she grabbed a 10" decoy and left 1" on either end of her mouth visable. I pulled the decoy (and Jaws) up so that her back crested out of the water before she threw the wooden decoy and splashed away. We made a rough measurement in relation to our spear hole and estimated he between 55-57". She is a beauty with her back wider than her mouth, and thick!
Don't worry, we never spear muskies and can easily tell the difference. I just like to watch them. I also fished in the Muskies Inc tournament up north for years, even got in the top 10 one year. I just respect them.

I'll let you know how things go.

ps. My shack is NOT on a designated muskie lake FYI.

Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I threw the spear twice on Sun at 12-13lb fish. The bad news is that the fish were carp and way off to the side smile.gif.
I did see a 5lb muskie come in to look at the 10" sucker minnow a few times but that was it, no northerns.
My friend threw the spear at a northern on Sat, but it was so small that fit between the tines. Northern relish/chip dip is good with these small ones.

The water is dirty due to the recent fall turnover clouding things up.
