Carlos Avery Question(s)

I'm muzzleloading for the first time this year... (I know, what took me so long...) And as I live in Anoka, and normally hunt way way up North, I'm looking for somewhere closer to home that I could sneak out into on the odd morning here & there during the muzzleloader season. Is Carlos Avery a good option? I know that it can get crowded during rifle season, but is it any better during the muzzleloader?

If I do go, where does a guy access it? Is there anyplace specific you need to go, or is it park & go in wherever you fell like going?

Most of it is open. There are closed to hunting signs in the areas that are closed. The hunting can be good if you get off the beaten path. If you hike aways back I have heard of some real monsters being taken. I bow hunted it last year a couple times last year. Seen a few other hunters but never had a issue. If you hunt during the week you most likely would have you way. I would suspect Muzzleloading opener could still be a little crowded. However I again just bow hunted it. Do some scouting and put your time in between the seasons and I would bet you will have some success.

It's been a few years since I've hunted the Avery. The land I grew up on bordered Carlos. I've taken some absolute monsters out of there. Granted, this was 20-ish years ago but dad and my older bro tell me it's pretty much the same. Here is what I would do, if I were you.

If you are coming from Wyoming on cty 22, there is a straight away about 2 miles long. Pull over in the middle of it and start walking. Yes, you HAVE to get away from the road, trudge through some swampy dump, and do some walking but it's worth it. Some of the biggest deer I've ever seen came from that area. They are fairly safe back there cuz not too many people are willing to do the work required to go get them.

The walking isn't an issue. I rarely sit to hunt, anyway. And swampy stuff will feel like being home to me! Looks like I'll need to get a map & do some scouting back there to find a few spots where the big boys hide.

slick, get a good map of the area and if you can a topo map. There is thearea that the big fire burned out about 5 years back and everything along that edge is pretty thick but good for deer. I'd also look to the areas that have limited access or one road in with maybe A PIECE OF PROPERTY SEPERATING ACCESS sorry caps lock was hit by mistake. Some pretty nice areas to hunt especially if you are willing to make the hike. Thigh or chest waders, gps are good things to bring as well as a trusty compass.

Thanks for the tips, guys, I appreciate it. I was thinking the burn area might be good, so now that I've got some confirmation on the conditions, definitely will have to give it a look-see.

There is getting to be a lot of "city slickers" back there so be careful because I have come across some that shoot at anything that moves. Beware and be safe.....

Carlos is a great spot to hunt with a muzzleloader. I've seen some huge deer in there duck or pheasant hunting. There's a little parking area off CR 22 west of Wyoming. If you want a hunting buddy, I'd be willing to help you out and show you some spots "off the beaten path." I've spent many days hunting the area, and after getting a certain distance back, have gone hours without seeing anyone. It makes for a great day!

kf1 - I might just take you up on that. Always good to have another hunting partner... I will let you know, though, I don't sit much... never really liked stands for some reason.

I'm definitely going to have to get a map and make a few scouting trips before the seasons get into full swing. Gonna wear a bright orange shirt, though, just in case!

slick, I was out scouting yesterday, and saw 3 deer and lots of sign in my favorite deer area. E-mail me and we can do some more scouting. In 5 years of hunting this particular area, I've only seen 1 other hunter.

sorry to butt in but just to let you know i did some scouting about a month ago and i did see a few deer i saw 1 small buck , 2 does and 3 fawns oh yeah a turkey too. It looks like a promising place. im doing bowhunting for the first time this year and probably heading there this year

I know I'll be doing some hunting there this year. It's a great place for waterfowl and deer hunting. The two places I'll probably be spending a lot of time in are the dove fields and by Wyoming.
