Fort Peck Lake - How's it been lately?

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I will be out in Fort Peck next week. Can anyone give some feedback about how the fishing has been? What you are catching, what depth, on what? Any feedback would be great. Let's start talking!

Chipes,

How did you do? I drew a coveted south side of the CMR elk tag...I need to start gathering some info from here and some other forums. Look for some regular posts about Ft Peck and the hunting and fishing prospects from me here ...

Sorry I couldnt provide you with any info before your trip!

Cheers

I was lucky enough to get a day trip on FP lake with Chuck Lawson. He's an excellent fisherman and former Governors Cup champion. We had good luck on the walleye and managed a few huge smallmouth.

I stayed on the lake for a few days and went out in the evenings and scouted for deer. In an hour one night driving around on the 4-wheeler I saw 24 deer, 12 bucks. I would consider 4 of them as being shooter quality. I have some friends that live on the lake and I think they as well have a tag for the reserve around the lake. Lot of animals around there.

Good luck. let me know how it goes.

Thats great Chipes! Where abouts on the lake were you? I am going to focus on the Hell Creek area west towards the Devils Creek area. I have never fished FP for 'eyes, any tactics/tips you can thro my way would be appreciated.

Did you get in any salmon action? Might still be a bit early?

I am stoked about getting over there!

We fished using live bait only. Leeches and crawlers. We used 2 oz. bottom bouncers with about a 4 or 5 foot snell. Straight hook too, no beads or spinners, etc...Very basic presentation.

Experiment with your speed. We caught most fish in 12-22 feet next to deeper water. We put in right near the dam and then went about 20 miles down the right hand side, if that makes any sense. There are huge walleyes in there. Biggest we had was a few 5-6 pounders. Chuck Lawson went out the next days and had a 9 and a 10.

no salmon fishing.

Talked to Mark at D&G Sports in Glasgow today and Fort Peck isn’t froze yet but people have been having good luck spearing northerns on Nelson Lake west of Glasgow. Their weather is a little warmer than we’re having. They are in the teens. If you get out that way stop in and say hi to the guys.
