Another kid fishing tale

I asked my 15 year old son if he wanted to go fishing yesterday after I got off work and he said yes. We were going to go to a favorite lake where we can fish for panfish while wading. I asked him how he wanted to fish and he said he wanted to fly fish for bluegills. I was very delighted because he chose that method without any suggestion from me as to technique.

When we got there we separated and he fished his way and I fished mine. Once early on I called over to ask if he was catching anything. He wasn't. I reminded him that the first law of bluegill fishing is to try a spot for a few minutes and if you don't catch anything, then move to another spot.

He took that advice and we exchanged no communication until he signalled that he wanted to leave.

He told me that he had a good time, and that he caught some bluegills, a bass, and a perch. And he did it all by himself.

That's progress.

Way to go! Great story. That's the best way. Just let them do it by themselves and if they ask for help, well then give it to them. Always correcting them makes it no fun for them at all.
