LABS4ME
Looks like the turkeys pulled off a good hatch this spring. Been seeing some huge clutches of poults running around with their Mom's. I ran into one huge group (turned out to be 2 hens together) of 15-20 on a jobsite the other day. They were no bigger than small Bobwhites with long legs. What really amazed me is how these tiny little puff balls could already fly...! I came around the corner on this walking path and their they all were... they took one look at me and all flushed or scattered. The ones who flew easily went 20-30'! The 2 hens were in the brome grass and started clucking loudly to regroup and 5 minutes later I saw them clearing the next hill. I then went up ahead and flushed a hen right off the path... she was still sitting on her nest! This little honey hole won't last long. The back 40 only has walking trails through it now... but a few years from now it will be houses. The builder gave me permission to archery hunt it next year... I'm thinking it's time to try with the stick and string... We consistantly see 10-20 birds a day when working out there... It's beautiful oak bluffs right off the St. Croix. One day I had 5 Toms strutting and gobbling for my mouth mimic calling... I don't think they've ever seen a hunter! I like those odds! But I'm sure they will find a way to even them out!!! Good Luck!
