HarryG
I am having difficulity find a grass bag for my mower. I picked one up used, and had trouble finding a cheap one with a bag. So I decided to get a mulcher with out a bag. My mower has hooks to put a bag on but I cannot find one anywhere. Can I just mulch all the time? It seems many people do that and not bag. It seems that the grass would get choked off and not prosper.
Powerstroke
You couldn't be more wrong. Mulching is perfectly normal. It worked ever since people started mowing. Baggers are only there if you wait to long to mow, then you mow too short and now you look like a hay pasture. On average, leaving the clippings on your lawn will add about 2lbs of nitrogen naturally to your lawn over the year. Thats the equivalent of 2 fertilizer applications. If you do wait too long or the lawn gets a nice growth spurt and you're picky about rows of dead grass on your lawn then baggers are nice, but there is nothing harmful about mulching. Things to look out for would be an excessive thatch layer. Thats is the decomposing matter on top of the dirt. Every yard has it and the grass grows right through it. Only concern is if it gets more than about a half inch thick.
HarryG
Thanks Powerstroke, You just saved me $200 on a new mower. My grass was too long but I plan to keep up on it so it won't be such a hassle. If it gets too long, I will just rake it up. I was concerned about choking the grass but now I know it won't. Should I continue to add fertilizer like Scotts? Duffman
Been mowing my yard with a mulcher for 13yrs, I've never bagged once. I keep my lawn pretty short though. I still fertilize it about three times a year.
Powerstroke
Adding fertilizer will still be just fine.
