sparcebag
You can rent a stump grinder, there small, an advertised busissness for stump grinding would be the way to go.
CSTPETER
Stump grinding /tree service is the way to go. The rental grinders are generally underpowered and laborious to use. Too bad you're on the other end of mn, I'm just leaving the house to knock out some stumps with my Skidsteer mounted grinder.
Powerstroke
Find out if there is a rental place near you and see what they charge. Then call a stump grinding contractor and see what he charges. Do the cheaper one. If it means doing it yourself its not that hard. The grinding is the easy part. Removing the chips and cleaning out the hole is the hard work. IFallsRon
If you hire someone to grind the stumps, make sure that they get all the stump and the big roots, too. Some guys quit when they have a big pile of chips even though there's still plenty of tree under the ground.
Powerstroke
Its not necessary to grind down any further than 6-8" unless you have a personal preference about the matter. Its easy to grind down 12" or more if the machine can do it, but you end up grinding about 80% dirt to get out the last 20% of the stump. No point really.I do agree about getting the running roots if they run along the surface. Its makes kind of a mess, but its better than having lines of hard roots running through the yard once the tree is gone.
river-rat4
I had a 20" diameter stump and some surface roots removed last fall for about 75 clams. It was well worth it to me, but not for all. I needed to remove it for a drive way. It will settle as the remaining root rots. Keep this in mind. I only have regrind/class 5 and is easily filled. Paving or concrete would be a big headache with the settling.River-rat4
muskyman1
I know of people who have used a v-ripper/subsioler on a tractor to pop all the roots going out then ripped the whole thing out of the ground with a tractor.
Nutty Fisherman
Stumps will not rot if they can not get air. In my 40 years of being in the construction work I have dug up many trees that had been buried for many years and they were just as good as the day they were buried. Some were buried for more then 40 years from what I was told.
