Guest
The other day I was out shopping for clearance tackle when I came across a little booklet that was a weight to length to age ratios guide. In the book they had norhtern fish and southern fish. They showed that the fish down south have a faster growth rate. But I think it said that they don't live as long. Whats the deal with this? has anyone seen something similar to this? I thought it was kinda interesting. Why would the age and size differ so much from up here? Guest
Fish in the south grow faster because they always maintain a high metabolism. They don't go through a cold water period that causes the fish to become lethargic. Their metabolism is constantly in need of food so they keep eating. The baitfish down there flourish more heavily as well. A 2 pound crappie up here cold be 10-12 years old and a 2 pound crappie down south could be 4-5 years old. The reason they die sooner is because their bodies can't sustain the constant pressure and that causes a faster death rate. Other factors fall into line such as pH levels and body concentration.Good Fishing, Matt.
