Vexilar and Perch

perca

Recommended Posts

Is the Vexilar really useful for perch fishing? The normal routine is to slug holes until you find 'em. If they are there and not biting you can usually tell by line bumps. No bumps and you keep moving. I can see the advantage for salmon, eyes, northerns, and crappies, but can someone give me feedback on their experience with perch and the vexilar?

i fish for perch alot in the winter and the vexilar works very well finding them and especailly getting them to bite... last week we moved alot trying to find biting perch, everywhere we stopped there were alot of fish on the vex but they just wouldn't bite, if you didnt have a vex, u'd think there wasn't a thing beneath you, and a vexilar is great for getting finicky fish to bite, u can tell how they are reacting while u jig.. a vex is very useful while fishing for perch

I litterally would not go on the ice without my Vex. I have both the FL-8 and the FL-18. The FL-18 is awesome beyond description.

I fish deep water in the 40 foot range for 1 pound plus perch. If they are tight to the bottom, the red will have a little glow or wiggle to it. That is fish.

You can tell how they react to your presentation if they stay or scramble away. If you didn't have that knowledge you have no clue as to how they are reacting to your presentation.

Here on Devils Lake perch run most of the time from any movement when the bait is in their faces. If you are aggressively jigging with no clue as to if whether or not there are fish down there, you will NEVER catch a Devils Lake perch because you run them off.

I have caught a lot of fish that I wouldn't have it wasn't for my Vexilar. It is your mood indicator for the fish. A lot of times you wouldn't find suspended fish without a vex. Perch can be finicky and a vexilar will help a ton. Cameras are one step up as far as seeing the mood of fish but I would buy a Vexilar before I would by a camera. I use the FL-8 and have no compaints.
Good Fishing, Matt.

The video that came with my FL18 actually showed a fella demoing the unit buy catching perch. It looked a few times like he may be having trouble demoing the stuff because the fish were so aggresive and he couldnt jig his lure up and down to show bottom seperation without a perch comming up and hitting it.... funny!
The perch he was pulling out were very nice! Hope to find a hole like that someday!
Very good watching if you know someone with that video. Like I said, it came in my FL18 Propack.
Good fishin!
Jeremy

would not go out without my unit.Saves time and when you find the fish gives you a understanding of their mood and the color-size-and technique that will produce for that time frame.Love it!

I got a vexilar fl 18 and usually fish mostly perch and wallys. I love it for fishn both, cuz u never know when the fish will be suspended or just not biting on wut you have set up for em. This helps me decide if i should try a different lure or even diff. bait. good luck

I would say if your a very strong believer in your luck as the primary factor for successful perch fishing, you don't need a Vexilar.

As a Lucky guy, and without the aid of a Vexilar, your betting the perch is lucky too. Lucky enough to find you and then locate your bait.

If that stoke of luck materializes then your now betting that your luck will get the bait positioned correctly.

Now add another heavy dose of extra luck so you can get the right bait presented in a manner the fish wants at that particular time.

If your truly lucky then there is nothing to it, your catch one perch and your a lucky guy.

But are you now lucky enough to have the same circumstances repeat themselves?

I know I am not that lucky, so I use a Vexilar.

Wish I was!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
