vex problem

Recommended Posts

my vexilar has been giving me some trouble lately. when i see my lure or a fish on the screen, it doesn't stay a constant mark, it just keeps flickering... i was about to kick it accross the lake it was so annoying and hard to distinguish everything on the screen. it does work perfect for a while but will always go back to flickering... anyone know what the problem is? something wrong with the brushes in it? it's only a year old and in it's second season of ice fishing... thanks for any info...

My vex was doing the same last night. if I turned off the I.R. (by pushing in the Gain button) All my problems cleared up. I think that there must of been some kind of interference.

Depending on how deep your fishing, what can happend is the bait will "float" to the outside edge of the cone of the ducer. This happends alot with minnows hooked on plain hooks and certain spoons that will swim to the outer edge of the cone. The deeper you are the more line you have out. Giving the bait more of a chance to pull outside the cone. Adding weight to deadstick minnows and jigging spoons as vertical as possible will help. But its the depth that counts most. A bad battery can also cause targets to flash. But if your seeing true fish targets(red) flashing and not staying on the screen, the ducer may have gotten damaged. Another question is where you seeing this flickering at night? Micro organisms that come up from the bottom at night are so tiny that the air sacs they use to carry them through the water will register as a flickering target.

Keep your battery charged and in good shape. Low voltage gives funny readings. Your bait probaly is not sufficently in the cone to get a hard reading. Minnows will swim around causing the flicker. Use another split shot or larger jig if you want to see more signal. Don't worry about seeing a "classic" read-out if weight or lure action is an issue. Sometimes it helps to "pin" your bait down with more weight on finicky fish that don't want to chase for food.

I've experienced the same issue with my newer FL-8 (5 years old). If I pull the transducer out of the water and run a moistened finger across the bottom of the transducer, the problem is gone. I don't know if it's a micro-thin layer of ice or trapped air or what, but this fixes it for me. It might be air since I have a zillion little scratches on my tranducer from trying to shoot through the ice without the aid of water.
