Ryan_V Posted April 2, 2007 Share Posted April 2, 2007 is it too early to put crabgrass preventer down yet?? if so, should I do it before or after I thatch the yard in the next couple months?? want to get on top of my yard this year, it's been going downhill the last few years!! LwnmwnMan2 Posted April 2, 2007 Share Posted April 2, 2007 You're still a couple of weeks early yet.If you've got a blacktop drive, or curb lines, you MAY want to throw a little down along the edges, about 6" from the edge if you can, because that area of turf will start to warm up quicker than the rest of the yard.With these cool rains, and temps later this week dipping below freezing, there's no hurry to get the preventer down this week.As far as dethatching your yard, you have to do that first, or wait to do that until the fall. Preventer works as putting a chemical "barrier" down, preventing new seeds, whether grass or crabgrass from germinating.If you put down the preventer first, you'd completely destroy that barrier when you dethatched your yard.
