? btu in new house

Depends on windows, leakage, insulation etc. I use an old 30,000 btu. propane unit with chimney for an 8' X 12' with 1.5" of beadboard insulation in the walls and 3.5 inches of R19 fiberglass in the ceiling. Its more than enough heat but I got the unit for free so couldn't go wrong.

An educated guess would be you'd need about 20,000 btus if you've got half way decent insulation and windows. One thing to remember about the new wall mount ventless heaters is how much water vapor they emit. All your cold surfaces will be wet when your heater is on. Its really hard to beat the older models with a chimney. You can usually find them at garage sales for 5 or 10 bucks.

No matter what you decide, don't forget to mount a carbon monoxide detector on the wall. Cheap life insurance.
