Guest
Do any of you have sucess keeping chubs for several months? Seems like mine always die after several weeks. I have to drive 75 miles to get them and they are rather expensive. Noticed several posts suggesting Water wheel filter. What size of tank should I be using for 3 - 4 dozen chubs? Store them in my unheated garage with air temp 20 - 40 degrees during typical winter. Any idea max Nitrate level before water change nessary? Guest
Profet097 Do you have any rough idea how often you change the water in the cooler? Any rough idea how long you have sucessfully kept chubs alive using this method?
WarrenA
Aquarium people say that you need 1 gal for each inch of fish. I made my tank out of styrofoam and fiberglass sheeting. I have had chubs and minnows in my tank since Nov. 1 they are starting to get thin but are in good shape. My tank holds 35 gal. of water, I started with 1 doz. chubs and 2 scoops of perch minnows. What you need to closely monitor is the water temp. 34 degrees is perfect. I use a submersible water pump for a fountian and a homemade filter. take only the chubs you need and circulate the water in a charcoal filter do NOT feed them keep them COLD. use only aquarium sealer my tank is 2 ft wide by 3 ft long by 18 in tall and I keep 1 ft of water in it and have not changed the water yetcheck every other day and net out any dead ones as they spoil the water. Good Luck
ScoutII
One thing about Chubs is keep tank covered!!! They will jump out, especially when the temps start to rise.
