Adventures In Sailing: A Tale Of The Shelter That Lost A Battle With Mr. Wind.

It got late in the season(open water appearing along the shore)and we knew that the house(6x6x7) had to come off.It was windy and the ice was like glass;but we thought with ice cleats on we would have not problem pulling it off - NOT.AS soon as I cut the tie ropes the house took off with both of us in tow.My buddy(?) let go, but I held on trying to dig my cleats in - NOT. It dragged me off and on for over 1/2 mile, while
heading for some open water between 2 Islands.I finally let go about 30 ft from open water and watched the house slide to it's watery demise.I have been told by local bass fishermen of the excellent structure between those islands, but I know the trollers curse me!

Not once but twice. I had a flag go up on a tip-up, as I was bringing the line in hand over hand the pickeral bit me off when I had hin in the hole. I thought no big deal. I didn't have to unhook it, just tie on a new hook. Thats when a 24" pickeral jumped out of the hole and onto the ice. So I unhooked it measured and released it. It couldn't turn around in the hole and didn't go back down far enough to get under the ice so it took off for the moon, but only made it to the wrong side of the ice.

There are some benefits to letting the wind capture your portable.

Last year I was on a lake a few days after christmas jigging for some gills. The ice was still pretty thin, say about four inches or so, and there wasn't any snow on the ice. So as you can tell the ice is already lacking traction and with the push of a pinky your Fish Trap was gone.

There was another fisherman jigging near by as well. We were kind of sharing holes hopping from one to another trying to cover a big mud/grass flat. As I'm jigging I look up to find my companion walking away from his portable attempting to punch a few more holes. All was fine until we got a little gust of wind. He had his rod resting in a rod holder that was attached to the portable. His portable went shooting across the ice and believe it or not a dang near close to a pound gill was hooked on the end of his line shooting across the ice with it. I dropped down the top of my Fish Trap and put the auger inside of it and ran over to help. It was probably one of the funniest things I've seen while ice fishing.

Finally we calmed the situation and we were back to fishing and my fishing partner released the gill to fight another day. I bet that would have made the fishing hall of fame as a new method of catching fish, not to mention a dandy gill.

Good Fishin, Matt.
