Guest
This is a question that easy to answer, but tough to explain in great detail without writing a book. Get my drift? Here is a very brief starting point, and how I fish for them. Every lake seems to have a different strategy, but generally this is what I look for. You will find early ice eyes holding to the typical fall locations, on structure primarily. I look for areas around 15 feet of water on a break early and move deeper as the winter progresses. These fish are typically most aggressive in lower light periods around sunrise/sunset. As the season progresses and oxygen levels change I find the fish to go deeper, near structure, but also on flats. By the time the snow melts and the ice is quickly disappearing (walleye season closed) I usually go for perch deep, like 40-45 feet. I usually mistakenly catch several walleyes, and pulling them up from the deep water can kill them, so reel in real slow, or if I can tell its a walleye, I try to lose it before I drag it up. Just goes to show their behavior pattern and how to find them from early ice (shallower) to late ice (deeper). Good luck!
Guest
Since the ice is not here yet and I took the week of Christmas off got a question. Where would I find the eyes?? would it be where I found them during opening fishing? or should I try the areas they would spawn in? or should I try the Ice fishing holes thaqt I have heard they haunt?? I am new to the eye winter/ice (if it ever comes) thing.thanks-Broncosguy
