splake at larson lake

I saw that the state record splake was caught on larson lake by effie in itasca. Anyone fish this lake? Looks challenging, but it's all challenging to me...Can you specifically target splake?

Are you considering heading up that way for trout opener??

Nah, not for opener. Maybe some other time. That lake isn't too far from Caribou down on 38. I really wanted to fish that last year, but my planned trip happened in Feb when the weather got to be lik -20 for that weekend. I was bummed. I can't get away to target trout through the ice...otherwise I'd do Burntside or some of the other big trout lakes.

I fish Larson 3 or 4 times each year. Great lake for large pike and the occasional splake. Very deep water in spots. 177 at the deepest.

I have fished Larson every year for the past 5 years and this year has been the easiest so far. There was little snow so you can drive vehicles down the snowmobile trail to the lake. Normally you have to sled in there. It is a long hike in if you don't have a sled. There were about 16 trucks at the landing on opener this year - more than I have ever seen before. Except for one angler targeting Northerns, I believe everyone was targeting splake and doing ok from what I saw.
