Yeppers Wiskers is moving up slowly but shurly... last year we were in a real slump and took 116th place. This year the first day we were in 14th place out of 150 teams. First two fish were 15# 15# in the first 20 minuets. We ended up with 52nd. That second day was a disaster.. could not buy, steal or beg for a 5# cat. that is all we needed for the last fish to be in the money.. sigh maybe next year. Was a real good time though.

Would sure like to see ya up there one year Eddy.

I was asked to fish it by a few guys this year, but passed. Too much of a zoo for me to be honest.

I fish against a lot of them names up in Canada though, Gary & Bonnie Mounce, the Neb crew, the GF boys. That darn Opie...Dean Opatz beat us out by 1.26 +/- pounds at the Cats on the Red Classic, pushed me to 2nd. His average was 23.9 per cat, mine was 23.7..yup..kinda close Eh. His first 4 fish on day one last year went 98.89 pounds and he was done for the day. We caught up fast on day one and squeezed him tight on day two. Just one #28 in the boat would have sealed the deal...Oh..Well. Next time Eh!

I like the 100% C&R format the Canadian Cats Classic has. No fish ever see the live well, 4 cats per day, no culling, no killing. I do not like to see high tournament stress on fish, or high harvest rates of big fish because of a tournament. I wish more were run like it.

I hear ya Ed, I like the canada style too.

Ya that Opie did it again.. He is just the luckiest catter out there.. lol ..By the way, I noticed that you missed 3rd place up top there.. Mr Opie...

I thought we were gonna do good after the first day but could not find a 5#+ fish any where..

I did find many dead cats on that first day. I counted 13 dead cats floating on the river and all were 12#ers and up.

That culling and holding fish all day in the wells is real hard on them and impossible to regulate. I know for a fact that many cull I have heard talk. But what can ya do, ya know. I was told that Stu is not having that tournament any more??? Any news?

Take care.

keep the hook sharp.

Nope no Cats Classic in Canada this season anyway. Stu wished to pass it along to others to run, just nobody has grabbed the ball just yet. I hope some enterprising group or sporting goods interest gets wise to this promotional opportunity.

I could easily see 3 major events on the lower Red. One spring cats event, a late summer cats event, and a whopper walleye event in the late fall.

Plus there is certainly an opportunity for a world class international carp event on the lower Red. World record class fish swim these waters and the opportunity for major promotion is there.

So who will it be, SALMO, Frabill, Rapala, Berkley, Gamakatsu, or a governmental agency? Some group will jump on this, if they are wise.

The opportunity to increase the tourism dollars for the Provence of Manitoba and all of sporting Canada is staggering.

On day two, the fish almost always are tucked up tight in the gnarliest snags they can find. All that boat traffic on a narrow river puts 'em down. Fished that river hard since 1972. Fished the tourney twice myself. Been there saw that. Finished in the money once (tenth place after day one), out of it once.

Lots of folks do well day one and get blanked or fight for a few small fish on day two.

Day two tactic that's proven successful: Heavy line with heavy jig and goldeye/sucker/frog dropped right into the crud. Instead of dropping the bait several feet upstread of the snag, anchor just above it and get that bait right down in there.

It's worked for several teams over the years. Not many know of it. Now you do.

I have read much about that and believe it works. I just have a hard time convincing my partners to give it a go. Plus I choked and forgot to try that this year. sigh sigh.. "Note to slef, give it a go"

Old habbits are hard to break and im guilty.

Regarding that Canada Catfish Derby I don't know Jack diddly about if it's a go or not as I don't fish it, but I thought I had seen a post last winter over on WC regarding the Canada Cat classic tourney so I did a search over there on this and a few folks had posted dates {aug 16&17} and a contact # for a gentleman from Winnepeg who was supposedly throwing it. Big controversy about entry fees and payouts in US vs. Canadian money's and the exchange rate ect. Very entertaining....gotta love those posts by Bob and Larry.
