2-Way Radios

You are supposed to license them if you use the 5 mile range. I believe that is the GMRS freq. if you don't run it on one of those channels than no you do not license them. If you run the higher power freq. you are suppose to license them wink.gif.

I thought as long as your radio is capable of GMRS, you are suppose to register them.

The packaging may say 5,10,15,or even 18 mile range, but you should try out your particular radio. I have found more GMRS radios failing to work less than 6 blocks as oppose to the multiple miles stated.

Not necessary to obtain a license just to carry. You are required to be licensed in order to transmit.

Earlier this year I checked into the cost and it was still $75 for three years.

Many FRS/GMRS radios have a menu option that will allow you to disable the GMRS channels. I know my Garmin Rino does.

That's just it. Some of these laws are rather silly because for all practical purposes, it is nearly impossible to enforce them. Similar to copywrite laws regarding music CDs, etc. Even if you transmit long enough your position could be triagulated, by the time you're located, you have probably moved somewhere else.
