MIKE IN lINO III
This will be our second time duck hunting up at the property. Last year we concealed ourselves in the long grass on shore. It worked OK but we really couldn't see down the shoreline like we wanted. I have wild rice out to about 30 yards, it is thin so I am thinking that the duck boat out in the middle of the rice is out of the question, or is it?We will be going up to build some blinds to put out on the shoreline to give us a little better vantage point. We will be making the blinds out of 4' x 6' skids and building the tradional walls. We also plan on putting adjustable dock legs on them so we can level them out. Couple of questions:1. Would the boat idea work in the sparse rice? Or would it stick out like a sore thumb?2. The blinds that we build are going to be just off the shoreline, would it work if we put them out in the water more or would they also stick out too much?I see some of the setups that other people have and it seems like they would tip off the ducks and they would not land. Thanks for any and all input. Mike
Fish&Fowl
The shoreline idea doesn't sound too bad. It's hard to tell without actually seeing what you're talking about, but I think the boat idea might not work. I have been looking at similar situations up by the Falls, and certain areas have rice that is so thick birds can't land in it. Even there a boat seems like it would stick out pretty bad. If nothing else give it a shot and see how the birds react. Good luck!
Farley
I would build the blind in the weeds if it isnt too long of a shot. If you want to see better, build it high enough so when you stand up you can see over the weeds. The more hidden the better I think. You wont be able to see every duck from a mile away but as long as you have a clear shot in front and above you, you should be allright. Trust that the ducks will land in your decoys when you build it, and build it strong as possible so it lasts for years.
