I took the Humminbird 737 out for a spin last Sunday. Needless to say it was way better than my Eagle Z9000 which was state of the art 16 years ago. It’s about time I upgraded. I detected fish that my old graph missed and with 640 vertical pixels it gave much better definition to suspend fish and baitfish. The 4000 watts power can’t hurt either. I did see my ½ oz lindy rig sinker a few times but I didn’t get a chance to see what the smallest jig that could be detected was. I also didn’t check the target separation. I’ll do these things next time out.
As far as the Dual Beam Plus there were a few times when I marked something in the 60 degree cone (cone diameter is equal to the depth) and not in the 20 degree cone (cone diameter is 1/3 the depth). The 90 degree cone (two 45 degree transducers) covers two times the depth. One time I marked some suspended baitfish or panfish and turned in that direction (it shows which side of the boat they are on) and was able to go over them again. This should be good for open water trolling on Mille Lacs. I want to use this to try and stay off the base of a steep drop without actually moving the boat over the base before detecting it which is what you need to do with a 20 degree transducer. I will work with this a little more the next time out also.
The system is very customizable for what you want. Only select which sonar screens or gps screens to see so you don't have to scroll throught them all. I don't have the gps so all of those are hidden. I've used my buddy's 332C and the 737 can do everything the 332C can do as a graph and more. In summary, I think the technology works but I have a little more work to do before it gets my full endorsement. Good competition for Lowrance.
I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought.
Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just
buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
Congrats on the motor! I think you’ll like it.
I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers. 160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.
Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor. Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to
get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius)
says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
