Do you guys work jackpot type lures with your rod tip up or down? Holding the rod tip up gave the lure a more even side to side motion. Holding the rod tip down caused more of a staggered side to side with the lure jumping farther in the direction of the boat travel. Must have something to do with the line in the water and the bow from the forward movement of the boat.

I was pondering this question while chasing the 'skillunge last night. Had a follow from mid 30's with tip down. Also any thoughts on side-to-side jerkbaits?

Are you fishing a jackpot or a something else? The best way to fish a jack pot it with a short rod 6 to 6.5 feet. You want to work it with the rod down. You want to work in a slow methodical pace. What you want is for the jackpot to create a bubble each type it's is jerked. It creates a kerplunk sound that triggers fish. I have tried other baits and haven't found the same success but it probably doesn't make a difference. My advice is slow down. Good luck

I was throwing a Poe's Jackpot. It was pretty calm last night and with the trolling motor on 15-20% (about as low as it goes with the prop spinning) I was moving forward just enough to catch up slightly with the lure.

The bait was working side to side real nice. I was using a 7 1/2 footer but I also have a shorter rod to try. I was just curious because holding the rod up keeps the slack out of the water. Although Pop-Eye forearms would be nice for this technique. grin.gif
