icehousebob
Hi guys, one of my male offspring and I are planning on fishing Red for channels for three days later in the month. We are planning on camping out also. I'm new to the Red River, so, I could use advice from the more experienced catfishermen on where to camp, where to start our search, best baits, etc. If any of you are up there for the 21st., 22nd., and 23rd., stop by our camp and I'll feed you. I'm not too bad of a camp cook, especially at breakfast time. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
hanson
How far north are you heading? I would suggest Grand Forks at a minimum. And now that I'm thinking about it, I believe I might be up there that weekend as well. Grand Forks Catfish League Tournament I think is that weekend and I'm more than likely to fish it. Further north, you have Drayton. There is a lowhead dam at Drayton that creates some pretty good fishing although I haven't been there yet. The further north you go, the bigger the fish tend to get. I think you'll find some pretty good advice here. And YES, you are a pretty good breakfast cook. Thanks for the food at the Mankato Cat Gathering. Here's a teaser for ya, (2) 18 pounders of the triple 18s we caught earlier in the year. This was at Grand Forks.
fiskyknut
Yepper iffin you are fishing in the US you're gonna wanna fish GFKS or spots northward to the Border. Camping is availiable in EGF and GFKS. At Drayton you have a campsite right in town, or you could camp right down by the dam. Pembina has a campground too. Also there are gobs of spots off the beaten path along the river that we fish/camp on, but they are harder to find! End of July cutbaits would probably be my bait of choice, with Goldeyes topping the list of species type. Leopard frogs would also be something I'd wanna have along though these shine brighter a bit later into the summer. Large live chubs and Stonecats can get a monster on occasion as well. Iffin you aint been up here before you're gonna love it! Bring some mudboots just incase, this river has mud like no other. Best way to describe it is that it can have the consistency of warm butter! Good luck.....fiskyknut
icehousebob
Thanks for the info, guys. We figure we're going to stay at East Grand Forks. Does anyone know of any campgrounds there on the river where we could tent it and launch our boat from? I'm figuring it would be smart to make advanced reservations. Another question, I'm driving my Silverado two wheel drive pickup with posi-traction. Will I have any trouble at the boat launches? Hanson, if you're up there I would consider it an unfriendly act if you and your fishing party didn't come to breakfast, and my people would be forced to send your people a strongly worded letter, if either of us had people. I'll be camped in a large white canvas 'A' frame tent with my blue topped canopy out front for cooking. Bring an appetite. If you're tenting it, maybe we could get a camp group of catguys going. Thanks again for the info.
