Rod and Reel

Recommended Posts

I have never been Musky fishing and I am thinking about getting a new rod and reel. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. I was thinking about going with a Shimano Calcutta TE 401 for a reel and a St.Croix Avid Musky 6'9" Heavy. Any advice would help. Thanks in advance.

I picked up the 7'7", Med/Hvy St. Croix Avid Muskie rod with the Shimano 400B reel last month. It's a great combo.

Get the rod length you are comfortable with, but this was my first 7'7" casting rod, and it was better than excellent. Really pin-points the cast.

You will love the TE 401 but I would go with a St Croix Premier or Avid 7'6" MH -- you can throw everything with that pole -- bucktail, jerkbaits, top water, etc. Nicest of all, the longer rod handle makes it a much more comfortable rod to hold and cast -- all day.
