Anyone ever consider IRC?

IRC is like an open door into your pc. No thanks.

What? That sounds like FUD, but whatever... With firewalls, routers, and a little common sense, it is less of an open door than your email client.

Might want to disable JavaScript, Virtual Machine, images, cookies, any IM software and even pull the ethernet out of your computer! tongue.gif

It's hard to fault people for being paranoid about these things though.

Of course, but saying that another communication tool is an open door is rather absurd. Learn about something first before assuming it is evil.

Heh, if I wasn't such a nice guy I could post a link to a browser spawner that would make you go nuts trying to close the 8 bazillion windows it opens. Then you would know what an open door your browser is. tongue.gif

Would like to maybe get back to you later on this. Right now, I'm loading uo the boat and heading out for the night. I hear them flatheads shaking in the snags right now.

Well, I went and created #catfish on freenode this morning. Anyone that would like to try realtime chat is welcome to join and see what it is all about.

There are several IRC clients available, some free, some not.

Free versions include: Chatzilla, a Firefox addition.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/16/

X-Chat (this is built using the binaries that are open & GPL'd)

http://xchat-win32.berlios.de/?page_id=6

Commercial clients include:

mIRC. A very robust client that has been around forever.

http://www.mirc.com/

Klient. This is probably a little easier to set up than mIRC and has a lot of configurability also.

At any rate you can join after installing on the above clients (or one of your choice) by clicking here:

Note: before you can join, you need to register your nickname - see http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup for detailed info.
