Rod Choice - Lake Trout & Pike - Kasba Lake

Recommended Posts

Need SEASONED input for KASBA trip in early August.

Lures: 6" Dare Devils(Red/Wh, Wh, Silver), 6" Buck Tails (Red, Blk), 2.5 oz. Dble. Blade Spinner Baits (Pearl, Lte Blue), T55 & T60 Flatfish (Pearl, Iradesent Blue), 00 Mepps for Grayling - not sure of color

Rods: 6'8" MH Ugli-Stick for Lakers & Pike, 6' Ultralight for Graylings

Reels: Abu 177 Open Face spooled with 30# Fireline & Dacron, Pinnacle 100 Series with 8# Fireline for ultra-light setup.

Question: Is the 6'8" MH Ugly Stick enough rod for large Trout (30 lbs+) and large Pike (25 lbs+)?

Thank you in advance for your input.

Man, I’m jealous of your upcoming trip to Kasba. You will have a great time catching LOTS of Lakers and BIG ones too. I went up their in a group of 6 guys and we all came home with trophy fish. Didn’t catch any pike, but then again we did really try to catch anything other than Lakers. The first day on the lake we all were using our light stuff, by the second day we had all loaded up with the heaviest line we had.

We had our best luck using yellow 5 of diamond 3 ¼ oz Dare Devils for the BIG fish. Smaller bait, smaller fish. We also had good luck with flat fish and J plugs. I had a blast using floating Rapala’s on light equipment in the current for Lakers as well.

I’d suggest you find the heaviest pole you can find and some thing in the 7 foot range. Once you start dragging 3 ounces of lead all day you get tired and that’s before you even catch a boat load of fish.

Your in for the trip of a life time…..
