Battery Cable Splicing

bigpike

Question

I am going to be replacing a portion of my positive battery cable on my late 70's Mercury 50 horse outboard. It is severely frayed and cracked casing. Is there a simple way to do this splice on such large diameter cable? I am not replacing it all the way back to the motor as the cable goes into a plug that plugs to the side of the motor. THANKS

You should go to an auto parts store.
They have connectors that are in a plastic case with 2 bolts for the wires.
They use them alot in new cars for jump starting, alot safer than connecting to the battery, hope this helps...

If you don't want anything that is bulky I would go with a butt connector and than buy a plastic protector that shrinks over the connection you just made to seal it from the weather. This way you never have to worry about exposed wires touching bare metal.

But as stated before if you can replace the whole thing you are better off.

Thanks guys,
After doing some other searches I think I am going w/ the butt connector and heatshrink. I don't think it would be possible to replace the entire cable as it goes into a big plug that receives wires from the key (i think) and possibly the ground as well. I don't plan on purchasing an entire control setup.
Happy fishing
