Mold in boat carpet

sparkyaber

Question

I opened my access doors on the back of my boat to get to batteries, bilge, oil res. etc, and found mold on everything. Plastic, rubber, cloth, fiberglass, carpet, everything. Inspected further tward the front of the boat, and found more in all of the compartments. Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this, and how it happened.

I think that the seals on all of my hatches are verytight.

When I washed the boat last, I may not have let the boat dry out enough. With this little bit of moisture left, It may have created a mold problem?

Thanks

Abe

The best way to get rid of mold on everything but the fabric is 25/75 mix of bleach and water, then scrub, it will remove and kill the mold. Starbrite makes a mold/mildew stain remover for fabrics, you can get it at places like West Marine. If the boat is wet don't put the cover on it with the hatches closed, leave them open when not in use if possible to allow for air movement. If some cases if the hatches are that water and air tight you may need to get some moisture absorbing pads or containers like No-Damp and put those in the lockers when the boat is sitting.

thanks for the info on the starbrite stuff- I checked all three big box home improvment stores with no luck. I figured as much for the bleach. And last but not least, you bet I will be leaving the hatches open from here on out-

I don't put the cover on it when it is parked anyways.

Thanks again.
