SE MN Report: So many streams...

...so little time. Fished the Root River area all around Chatfield, Peterson,Lanesboro,Whalan&Preston last weekend, starting Friday morn through noon on Sunday. The South Branch of the Root was still running very cloudy, which matched the sky for Friday and most of Sat. The trout didn't seem to mind, and were hungry for the crankbaits and spinners. With the cloud cover/rain/drizzle it seemed like the windows for the morning and evening bites were extended by a couple of hours. Water levels were fine on all streams fished, though the South Branch was running higher than the previous two years. Once the Low pressure spun out of MN, the trout calmed way, way down to downright finicky. Most of the smaller streams we fished in the area were running clean/clear and were also producing on same presentations. One item of note: the few trout we did keep out of the south branch all had crayfish in their bellies--try to match the forage base! It amazes me how many miles of accessible stream there is in that area. Don't just rely on the DNR publication, go to their HSOforum and read about everything they have regarding trout. We did some matching up of air & topo maps from the recreation compass on the HSOforum to the publication (SE MN Trout Opportunities) and doing so made finding "fishable" areas much easier to find, without trespassing. Good luck to all, and put back some of those 16" fish for next year! -E-
