i am headed over to rochester tomorrow

i fish wisconson and the northshore so ihave no clue where to go over by rochester. a classmate of mine wanted to go so i said sure i would go along. any help i can get would be great. streams to fish and directions to rivers would be greatly appreiciatied. also what is hatching over there right now? thanks Jonah

You've got tons of options within an hour drive from Rochester. Pick up the book "Trout Fishing Opportunities in Southern Minnesota" and it will have every designated trout stream labeled on a well put together map, so directions to streams aren't a problem.

Go to Chatfield, Preston, Elba, Spring Valley, Rushford, Lanesboro. All these towns have good trout fishing very close in streams and rivers like the Root, Whitewater, and dozens of smaller streams that hold lots of fish.

Nobody's going to give you their favorite spot of course, but there are great resources (like the free map book I mentioned) that will make it very easy for you to find your own favorite spot.

Hatches right now...dependent on the weather of course. There will be some baetis (bwo's), and caddis. The baetis will be about a size 18 with gray/olive bodies, and the caddis will be primarily the gray caddis about size 16. When the fish are on the caddis they'll be leaping out of the water after them, and the caddis dry is best fished with a twitch to draw the fishes aggressively after it.

If nothing is hatching, your typical size 14-18 PT's, 12-14 scuds (orange/tan), 12-14 Prince nymphs, and caddis larvae patterns will do great...of course there's always bugger fishin' too.
